How important are live poker games to you? There aren't that many places in the US that have good cardrooms and most of them (LA, Vegas, New Jersey, Connecticut) don't seem to meet the other criteria you have.
how much of an objective is price?
I should clarify that I prefer to stay in the United States for the time being, and renting is fine for right now.
hawaii and its probably not really close. i say 'probably' because im hypothesizing based on logic, not experience.
best beaches in the US, best weather (if you like hot and dislike cold), probably some of the best food, probably the best people because its probably has the most 'foreign' personalities, probably the happiest people because of how great an environment it is (that type of thing affects joy way more than most want to admit), social life is probably very dynamic (like if you like day life you get that on beaches but if you like night life they have cities), i hear the water is actually warm and the rivers are awesome.
lots of other stuff too im sure. thing is that when living in US, i imagine you cant beat hawaii. i mean its where US residents go for vacation
I just got back from MAUI, HI.Quote:

The nude beach was wonderful, lots of hot college chicks running around naked, I was in paradise.
Gas was 4.50 a gallon. A box of Total Cereal was $7. The food at the restaurants was excellent. I used to hate sushi, but decided to try it once again since I was on Vacation, and it was Awesome!
Housing is very expensive, but you may find cheap rent.
There are no Casinos, not even lottery in HI. I did ask some people and they knew where there was a local "home" game. = "underground" casino
But,

All I can say is there is endless possiblity in Hawaii, but it can be expensive.
things you can do:
Mountain Bike, road bike, surf, sail, kite surf, swimming, diving, water ski, snow ski!!, rain forrest hiking, hunting, fishing, eat. I can go on and on. there is sooooo much going on, you should never be bored.
Add in all the tourist chicks who are looking to hook up, BONUS.
I guess you could say I had a great time. And I was on Vacation. So it could be alot different than living there, But I stayed with friends on the Island, and they are very happy people there.
wow, I could go on forever here... I'll post more pics if you want.
awesome pics, moar pics
the natives and the drugs in hawaii make it pretty shitty, and you are gonna need alot more than your 100k or w/e a year to live really well there. I lived there on base for close to a yr, id be happy to vacation there but never would i live there again, fuck that.
if u like beach towns id say San Diego is fuckin great, Hot bitches everywhere great food, esp if u like mexican shit, and the nightlife is fookin awesome.
also VA beach, VA is great if u live near the beach, i gots fuckloads of good memories in va beach, but it does get cold.
I know it ignores some of your criteria, but Atlanta is not too bad. I moved here to go to school from Chattanooga Tennessee (which I'm sure is reasonably similar to where you live currently), and I'm never going back.
It's a fairly cheap city to live in (as far as major urban areas are concerned). Its not scathingly urban, other than the traffic which is bad, unless you specifically try to live very close to where you commute.
I think the main plus to Atlanta is that its the local bastion of reasonably evolved people in the Southeast U.S. Everyone here has thumbs, its really neat.

If you play poker for a living, I suggest you do the "move around a lot thing" until you find somewhere you like. at 100k a year, all you need is a laptop and a car, the rest is just gravy. Move around until you find someplace you like, has all the amenities you need/want, and is "just the right distance" from relatives. IE you can visit when you miss them, and they can visit when they plan to, but they won't just "pop bye" for the afternoon. I find that 3 hours away from my folks is not far enough, but 14 hours away from my folks was waaay too far. Of course, for my job, I only make 26k a year, sooooo.... flying 4 hours to see my parents would be a much larger radius of distance.
i live in wash state, and no playing poker online here is not a felony. dont make the same mistake about the wash legislation that lay people make about uigea
Why do you want to stay in the States?
what other options are there than to live in the states? to live elsewhere for long one must have citizenship right? isnt it hard to get citizenship for most places that dont suck, and how easy is it to get citizenship in some places that dont suck?
Really? When I was going back and forth between Zeppos in Pullman Wa, Wufwugy, they were pretty adamant that Playing online poker is a class 2 felony.
You could lose your dealers liscence if you were caught playing online.
We had to talk about it in code, in order to circumnavigate the laws. We spent a lot of time talking about our "Roommates" and how he fared at the "Racetrack" that weekend.
Apparently they lost a dealer due to him talking openly about playing online, after the legislation. Lost his liscence and everything.
It's clearly a class C felony. Possession of child pornography is also a class C felony.Quote:

what we are seeing is a bunch of company owners of poker businesses who dont want to be the guinea pigs even though the likelyhood that they would be acquitted of all charges is extremely high. not only are there so many reasons that the government cant make playing online poker illegal, but there is no way in hell they could enforce it. the illegalities have to do with institutions on various levels that allow the games to take play (its even ambiguous if poker is one of these games), not with the individual playing.
besides, look at sportsbetting. the legislation against it is waaaaaaaaay stronger than against poker (like i said there isnt really even any legs about poker in the first place, just ambiguous 'games of chance' or 'illegal gaming') yet the sportsbetting online still exists and easily and all the time.
there is zero way for a non-communist or totalitarian or whatever govt to illegalize internet poker and enforce it. there are so many legal loop holes and contradictions. illegal internet gambling is heavily archaic, the battle is uphill from here (thanks to PPA), and it's going fast imo. internets is the way of the future and by far, and any individual getting in legal trouble for gambling online is a FoF wet dream at best.
fwiw, i file as poker player with all earnings from an online paper trail, and my bank knows my checks are all from a poker site. also, back when the wash legs was getting pushed through, a friend of mine had his panties in a uproar big time until he came across an email response from a legislator (i believe one of the bill sponsors) that said that the legislation was in no way intended for the individual player, but for the institutions that allow the games to take place.
besides whats gonna happen? is a branch or law enforcement that doesnt yet exist gonna come to your home and arrest you on a law that isnt yet explicit? would the state not get annihilated even without court once the media and public and specific poker enthusiasts learn about your 'crime'?
is there even a case in all of history where somebody playing a gambling game gets tried and convicted under a somewhat current judiciary?
also, when obama wins there will be four years in which barney frank and co will have ample time to get positive online poker legs through the senate. it is very likely that even in 09 could the opposite of uigea get pulled through
that comment was not meant to be taken in isolation, but with the rest of the post about how i thought a person with US citizenship exclusively may have a hard time residing outside the states.Quote:

I used to live in WA state and did a lot of research that convinced me there was negligible risk to the individual online poker player. Best evidence was this statement by the WA State Gambling Commssion:
(from http://www.wsgc.wa.gov/docs/press_re...ing_062006.pdf)Quote:
As for players, gambling on the Internet, whether playing poker, slots or another gambling game, runs a risk of a felony conviction. However, there is not going to be an active campaign against regular players. If players’ names appear in an operator’s seized records, the Gambling Commission would likely send the player a warning letter, notifying them that betting online is a felony. If a player’s name reappears again, charges may be filed.
Since they have no jurisdiction over PokerStars or FullTilt, there's no way your name would ever appear "in an operator's seized records".
And then this analysis by a gambling law expert: http://rose.casinocitytimes.com/articles/27754.html
Obviously a bigger risk than other states, but I'd move back there and play full-time in a heartbeat.
edit: But given your requirements, I'd go with Florida. Up north somewhere like Jacksonville or St. Augustine.

i nor any of the many poker players in WA have been pursued in any way over this issue, nor will we because the govt would be a laughingstock once the media found out.
it's like driving one mile over the speed limit; not only will a cop not stop you, but if one does, if you get a good attorney a judge will throw your case out because there are simply enough ambiguities.
new hampshire also does not have an income tax.Quote:

Wouldn't it suck though, if they had one of those jail break mass assrests like they did for music media 5 years ago concerning the filesharing systems back in the day. I'd hate to see you on a superbowl commercial saying "Hi, I'm Wufwugy, and I take it up the butt daily from Bubba Joe over there, because gambling is illegal and I chose to break the law, repeatedly."
Illegal but unenforcable is still illegal. It's up to you to sleep at night.
lol, oral sex is illegal in your state but I bet you sleep damn well after getting head.Quote:

ragnar,
there's lots of stuff we do which is on the books illegal yet not enforced. simply nobody cares about the laws. this, when regarding individual players, is one of them.
in how many states is same-sex sodomy still illegal? in how many states does anybody care?

maybe if they blew it up and started over
who destroyed my pics of Maui?
WARPE? did you do that?
warpe is on a mission!
i did it, didn't mean to fck the link up though. It just tilts me when people break FTR with their massive huge pictures.
I'll resize them, I didn't realize they were sooo big
if you really want to show your images within the thread and not be annoying,
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6913/97103238ip6.jpg
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5015/74036652uu7.jpg
then use what you copied in the following way:
if instead you want your images in all their huge-ass glory, copy the "thumbnail for forums (1)" link and paste it here. there's no need to apply the resize option then. repeat for every additional image.
example:
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5...6652uu7.th.jpghttp://img231.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
You can then paste images next to each other
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/8...4158lj0.th.jpghttp://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5...6652uu7.th.jpghttp://img231.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
or any other way you please. just know that there is a per post character limit that you will bump into. I'd say you could do about 9 images side by side in a single post this way.
YW :).
If you want to come take a trip out to central florida and check it out, you both can crash at my place for however long you want.
I think you'd like central florida. Girls are gorgeous, beach is close, a lot of rural areas bring housing costs way down. Great night life. I love this city
spoon you want to finish school right? find somewhere you want to go to school at and move there.
