What stakes to play?

Bleah, fairly simple and self-explanitory this one but will give some back story to it to help out :)

Currently making close to 6 figures doing a job that bores me and never have any motivation after getting hom to do anything but cook dinner and play WoW or the 360 (maybe pull out the guitar) but have decided I need to spend more time traveling and on toys so want to set myself some fairly easy goals to aim for over a medium timeframe and then see what happens past that.

This is mainly just to get me focused and putting in more hours at tables with the side benefit of increasing my roll + making extra spending money.

Am looking at 4 tableing 6-max for about 3-4 hours a night on average (eg might take two nights off and play a day and night session on sat/sun) with a monetary goal of ~$650 a week including either rakeback at FullTilt or the Stars FPP bonuses.

Currently I'm still playing 0.5/1 and starting to branch into 1/2 (down about 80 bb so far) with my stagnant roll of ~ $3400.

Would my goals be acheiveable at 0.5/1 @ 3bb/100 over ~70k or should I just make the move to 1/2....or do I need to look higher? I haven't had much luck with trying to decide what to do but think trying to set myself a monetary goal as a reward each week without stressing too much about losses is the best way to learn to open up my game past 22/11 style so figure I should try to get some advice on what level I need to focus on getting better at.

u can make 650 a week playing 1/2 but need to be a pretty good winner
may be better, since u are rolled for it, to play 2/4. That is, if you are a winning player at that level... (better rakeback/bonus clearance and less rake)

Just a quick word of advice. Don't make your goal $650 a week. If you do this, you're going to bonkers because of the variance in poker. Even big winning players have LOSING months so I wouldn't have a monetary goal. A hand goal is much easier to achieve.

If you're trying to figure out IF you can make $650 a week in the long run, that's a different story. I used to get 350 hands an hour in 4 tabling 6-max. 3BB/100 would be $10.50 an hour at 1/2. So to make $650 a week you'd have to play 62 hours a week. Also, 3BB/100 is a very good win rate. If you're that good and have the bankroll, you should be moving up anyway.

They are referring to numbers from poker tracking software such as PokerTracker. The numbers usually come in pairs or trios.

The first number stands for VPIP (voluntarily put $$ in pot). This is basically the % of hand a player plays preflop not counting the free plays in the BB. This is a measure of how loose the play is. A player who has a 100% VPIP never folds preflop.

The second number stands for preflop raise %. So if a player raises preflop 10% of the time, then he has a PFR of 10.

If there is a 3rd number it stands for postflop agression factor. This number is a tricky one to explain because it is dependent on your VPIP and even if 2 players have the same VPIP and postflop agression factor they can still be aggressive in totally different ways. But it is a general tool for quickly seeing how aggressive a player is postflop. A player with a number like .5 is usually pretty passive while a player with a number like 3 is usually very aggressive. But again, it depends on VPIP.

So when the OP says he is 22/11, he plays 22% of his hands and raises preflop 11% of the time. These numbers are rather weak tight for 6-max. Most players shoot for 24/17 as solid play and the better they got they'll often, although not always head upwards of the 30/22 region.

Def agree it's too tight, not sure about it being weak though. Then again, given my lack of often 3-betting with less than TT+, AJs+ it most likely is.

I have noticed I have a hard time playing hands like KJo+ to a raise when in position or KTs+ when in the SB...I have started opening up a little more with playing down to like 56s+ to a raise on the button but I definately need to work on opening up more as I think my preflop choices are leading to a negative impact on my post-flop play (eg if I just complete something like AJo in the SB rather than raise because I'm oop then it becomes harder to make good decisions postflop if I don't hit but likely have the best hand).

My apologies for not getting back to here sooner, I've been the Lich Kings bitch the past few weeks, and totally agree with the not setting monetary goals, just play good poker comments though this was mainly to see if it COULD be done at these levels so I could work out wether I had to look at moving up before I may have evidence I was actually able to win at 1/2 (and ffs why the hell can't I still) or if I can linger and get in 30k+ hands before moving up.
