Very quickly grew tired of it. Ironically, I was much more profitable at SnGs, but had no deep poker understanding.

My problem is not folding in large pots. Plain and simple. In order to counteract that problem, I am playing with a half-stack strategy. Until I learn the skills to adequately tell when I'm hugely behind, I am going to limit the amount that I can lose with my mistakes. I think this strategy more than moving down levels b/c: 1, Half stack is easy to play, and really is more interesting. 2, the edge I give up in nut hands I think I can make up with thin value bets (something I'm actually good at when I'm paying close attention) and not losing huge stacks. I am really enjoying it so far. I feel like I can use my stack as a huge weapon.

I don't like the idea of shortstacking. If it's a bankroll issue, just move down in stakes. You need to learn how to play deepstack in the long run, why not learn now? You've identified the problem, now find a solution aka fold more.

Well TECHNICALLY you're rolled for 10nl even buying in for 100bb. It might be a good idea to buy in short stacked for a while until you get used to the stakes, but then I say you should be buying in for full. You will get SOOO much more value out of your nut hands, and lose less with your TPTK type of hands.

I think maybe play a couple thousand hands (depending on how many tables you do at once adjust this) at short stacked, but after that start buying in for more.

Thanks yourfather. That link was really great. Folding when you clearly should is great. Folding a hand you're supposed to go broke with is a coup!

I'm really debating those two arguments. Maybe I should move down to 5NL, and buy-in for a full stack? I'm not a good player yet, and I am a big losing streak from being forced to move down anyways. If I really am trying to be disciplined, then I suppose moving down the stakes for the sake of learning a fundamental part of the game cannot be a bad thing.

On another note, I think you should really reconsider taking out your roll once you hit the 1k profit mark. By the time you get there, you will have gotten better as a player and moved up in stakes (I hope). Which means, being properly rolled, you will be making monies faster now. Think of it like an investment instead of having to regrind from the uber micros to get back where you are incase you decide to continue with online poker.

Today's observation:

Players at 5NL are much more willing to stack off with TPnK/any draw. Especially in 6max.

Bankroll: $370

Still not folding enough. I tend to express my tilt by playing too many hands, which leads to more losses typically. Tonight, I flopped a set and got higher fullhoused (sp?) on the river, losing a stack I had worked hard to earn. It happens. I was a little tilted, but got over it to play well. Ended up even.

Players at 5NL, imo, are a whole 'nother level of bad. My bankroll has expressed the same feelings.

I'm playing well, thinking more, and starting to really enjoy the game. Plus, I'm winning, AND folding. Hooray!

I'm considering a redeposit for a $100 deposit bonus!! That would be a great boost to my BR, and give me extra incentive to play. I'm not sure it would be possible at 5NL, but I should be moving up to 10NL sometime in early January.

Edit: I'll be following this great guide (thanks spoon) when I get more confident in my ability to fold (or in about 2 weeks, imo). I'm clearly overrolled for 5NL, but I'm learning more here than I did and the lost stacks don't affect me much.

I'm not really into New Year's Resolutions. But, I do have goals. I'd like to have my BR to $500 by the end of January, and also have accumulated 400 FPPs towards my bonus. I deposited $400 on the 31st to try and get $100 in free money, and I need to make 12 FPPs a day for the next 6 months to do it. That's not difficult now at 10NL, and will become even easier in 2 months (March 1 goal!!) when I've made it to 25NL, hopefully. I'd like to have the bonus cleared by the end of the school year (Mid-May) and that should put the BR around $800 with the bonus! I'll be destroying this bonus.

BR: $422 (doing well FOLDING my big overpairs and stacking off pheesh.)

Made a few spewy calls today, but am still up. I bought a license for Poker Copilot today, and it's a good Mac solution for tracking software. It's nowhere near as complex as PT3 of HEM, but it's good.

Been playing well. My chart looks nice over the last month. Played 10K hands total, most at 5NL but I just now switched to 10NL with great success. Learning some good discipline I think, and my results are improving!

Haven't been in any tough spots that I felt I should have folded. These stakes seem really easy after dropping down to 5NL and destroying it for 24bb/100 over 5,000 ridiculous hands. 10NL FTW!

$100 added to the roll in 3-weeks of NL6max! Movin' on up!

So, the BR hit $600 and I took my shots at 25NL. After two days, the roll is at $666! So far so good! I'm down to two tables, paying attention, running like 17/15 and getting my money in good and having fun while doing it.

My goals for February:
-Focus on Hand Reading. Find articles, and do retrospective analysis of HH's to see if I can make this all fit!
-Play 25,000 hands
-Clear 1,000 FPPs and get my $100 bonus (should be automatic if I play 25K hands)

Bought PNL with FPPs on Stars. I'm also going to fall way short on my hands goal for Feb, but probably reach all others.

BR: $711. 25NL has been good so far. Winning my share, losing to 1 outers my share, and table selecting like a fiend.

25NL continues to treat me well. +~8 buyins in 5K hands, while losing a few large pots with big hands. I'll be happy if I just break even over the next 5K!

I've been reading a lot about BR management, and won't be moving up to 50NL until I have ~$1750, have played at least 40K hands, and beaten it for at least 8BB/100. I want to have a protected roll for the next leap, b/c I think it's going to be a big one. Players at 25NL don't seem to be any good, and I'm doing a much better job at focusing/putting people on ranges.

Meh on not clearing my bonus this month and only playing like 10K hands. Yay for +$240

My role in this forum is not an influential one, as it shouldn't be. I don't have the time to study this game as much as I should/want to. I am a young classical musician, and my field is a demanding one, and I just don't have the goddamn time for this. I love this game, the upswings and the downswings don't bother me at all, but it's just too much for me currently. I'm taking a month or so off. I'll be playing sparingly, just enough to clear my bonus by the end of March, but poker has to take a backseat for me, for now. I'll also be reading Professional NL in my free time, but that will mostly be all.

Carroters had a nice post about volume, and I looked at my stats for this year so far.

If I knew what I do now in January, I would have made at least twice as much. My volume disappeared as I got closer to March b/c of important life events. Wow do I need to play poker

Just a quick idea for helping with volume. If you've got loads of other stuff going on, don't say I must play poker so many hours per day or between such and such a time. Instead, make yourself a weekly hand target that you think is reasonably achievable, but not a stroll in the park.

Constantly update and check how many more hands you have still to play and just squeeze in the volume in any free hours you can muster and dedicate fully to poker.

However, don't play under conditions ie. tiredness, stress etc, because this will do more harm than good obv. Try your hardest to meet the hand quota you set each week because imo the more regularly and consistently you both play and think about poker, the faster you improve and the less shit you actually forget. I mean honestly when we don't put in the hands we WILL forget important things. The worst part is we probably forget that we ever knew of them in the firstplace so it's hard to refresh on them.

Thanks man. I really need to have a set goal of hands per week. I'll give that some thought and see what I can come up with. Maybe something like 10K hands a week depending on how much I can get in on the weekend. It would be nice to play 10K hands, keep my rate around 4-5 ptBB/100 and make $200-250 a week. I'd be at 50 NL by the end of April. :shock:

I'm thinking I can 4 table 25NL for ~2 hours each night, for ~ 500 a weeknight. 500 hands a night is good enough for me. And that would be mostly Monday-Thursday. Fri-Sun nights should be around 2000 hands. That's only 8K hands, but I have to start somewhere. I'll start a session log here for my own benefit.

Only played ~100 hands today, but made 1.5 buy-ins (my girlfriend is great at convincing me not to play when I'm up +1 buy-ins during the day and am considering playing at night). So not much pokers...but If I make a buy-in every day I won't complain about low volume.

Tiny session this morning, made a quick $43 and stopped. I was also in an Asian Prehistory class at the time lol. Bankroll sits right at $900 so if I can break even for ~1000 hands I will clear my bonus and cross the $1000 mark in 10,000 hands of 25NL. Once this bonus is gone I am off to the nitland that is FTP, for their free $600 plus rakeback. Free monies! I am seriously determined to make it to 50NL by the Mid-April.

I've been doing a lot of EV calcs recently to get an idea of what kind of money I'm making based on certain decisions, and it's made me a much more confident player. I am playing disciplined, smart poker, and the only leak I've noticed is that I'm value-betting too large and ppl are folding their crappier hands. I'll start better smaller the keep their turn/river ranges wider. My lessons with Spoon are meant to simplify and clarify my thinking processes and range calculations to the point that it can become automatic. This should allow me to multitable (I play 2-4 tables now, but would like to play 8-10) and generally make me a thinking player. I think now, but not enough. 50NL has some good players and I need to be able to assign ranges with great ease and determine bet profitability quicker. All in due time!

So yea, BR is $1001.23 :) I am 40,000 hands at 7.5BB/100 (3.75ptbb very doable) from being at 50NL. Goddamnit I will be at 50NL by the end of April. I WILL BE. I wil play 10K hands a week so help me God. I am gonna fucking pwn this shit so hard it'll hurt! THe annoying thing is that I have to move my role to FTP NEXT week then play catch up the rest of the month. So maybe it won't work out, but I will definitely be taking shots by the start of April!

So I need to revise my goals, because I can barely get in 1K hands a night (which is what I need to make 50NL in ~ month +1 week. I'll be looking to move up in mid-April, like the third week perhaps. That's fine with me, as long as I'm making +EV decisions for every hand.

I'll post some good/bad hands later, but I've been playing much better since I started lessons with spoon and started frequenting the IRC. I'm in there about 3 hours every day now, and there are just so many free poker lessons to be had I can't even believe it. Some situational analysis I was just thinking about. Really basic, but somewhat interesting:

It's FR. We open AJs in MP to 4xBB and get called OTB by a standard LP retard. What's his range? I'd say (A7s+, 22-JJ, Non AK Broadway cards and SCs 65-T9) or 19% of hands. Preflop we have a respectable 57% equity against his calling range. This is +ev.

The flop is J76 rainbow. Interesting. Straight draws, overs, all sorts of crap possible. We bet 7BB into a 9.5BB pot. What's his calling range? Probably JJ, 77, 66, TT, all TP broadways, 76, 98 and probably AK, to not get too wide here. Our equity has now jumped to 71% against his calling range. He called with 19% preflop, and is continuing with 8.4%, or 44% of those hands. We crush this range. This is very +ev. Of that 8.4%, what is he raising? JJ, 77 ,66, 76, AJ probably. In general, it seems like you could expect to be raised 2.9/19 (15%) of the time you flop well in this spot, and to be value-towning the remainder of his continuing range for at least two streets. Perhaps I just never thought about how far ahead we can be!

Goals for April, now that my Stars problems have been resolved, I need to:

-I'll have to do my hand $ calcs by weeks in general, not month specific.
-I'd like to run at 8ptbb/100 over the next 25K hands. That would put at 50NL that fast. That could easily be three weeks of poker, but I just don't have ay money on any sites to play with.
-If I don't have a 2K roll by the start of June, I'm going to be seriously disappointed.

Some calculations b/c I was bored:

1000 hands~ $12 rakeback on FTP. This is what I will be earning every night, on average.

1 month ~ $360 earned (or 1/4 of my current BR...) and immediately rolling me for 50NL.

1 month of rakeback at 50NL @ ~ $16 every 100 hands is $480, or nearly a third of my move-up roll for 50NL. That's $840 I wouldn't have otherwise. Or 3/4 of my current BR...yea. If I can run at only 2ptbb/100 at both stakes, I'll make $900 in 60K hands, plus $840 in RB and $600 in bonus that's $2340 in 60K hands of microstakes.

This figures are assuming a lot. First that I can 6 table 25NL on FTP for 3 hours every day (more likely 8 table for 2 hrs), which I am doing now, and that I don't get doomswitched and megatilt, which I have never done.

How I have managed to overlook this blog is beyond me :/. You're doing well dude, don't let the last couple of sessions get you down. Also, just curious how you got Rakeback on your FT account. I already made one, but I never deposited, but I HAVE played for real money, so their support gets their panties all up in a bunch about it. Whatever, no biggie.

Also, you mentioned earlier in your blog that you had coaching sessions with spooner. If you don't mind mentioning specifics thats fine, but could you give a general idea of what a regular session would entail? I've been kind of interested in the idea of a coach once I get to 50nl+.

Poker is still a blast for me, and I have no intentions of slowing down. I clear $20 in bonus every other day, so that keeps me from going nuts in my current stretch of B.S. I played exceptionally well today. I valuebet amazingly thin imo (like getting non-stations to call each street w/ slightly better than marginal hands) and still got stacked and fucked over. This game :)!!!

BR: $1141. If I can run a LITTLE better I will be taking shots at 50NL by the end oft his month. I've seen others on this site taking shots at 50NL around ~1100 and that's just too low imo. Kinda seems like you haven't had enough hands at 25NL to move up but that's just me.

I stacked off 3 times today. Two times I had >80% equity preflop and on the flop, and in the third it was with TT<JJ on a QQQ board, and that sucked. Despite this, I should have folded the turn in the other two, a la Baluga Theorem. Man do I suck. I'm dropping down to 6 tables. I can't believe how bad things are going this week.

9 pots where I've put in >80BB and lost. Of those, 5 of them were unavoidable. Set over set, flopped FHs, TP+NFD, OESFD, Top2P.

I have this thread open right now as I'm about to play a session

Played a short session (400 hands) while in the IRC and actually played extremely well (while learning a lot) but ended down a bit. I was happy with it, but got it all-in pre w/QQ vs AJs and couldn't HOLD.

I hope my losses and lessons help anyone and everyone! Gonna go work on some hand combos now...
