I've nearly finished the Wire so need to get some more series on DVD - what should I get and why?
I've seen Sporanos, but other than that, I'm good to go.
I'd recomend Series 1 & 2 of Shameless to anyone who hasn't seen it. Very funny.

I'm not ashamed to admit I really liked Heroes. I think I've watched the first 3 seasons?
Also, I recently watched The Office (1-4 I believe) and really dug it.
And I've recently started watching Weeds (season 1-2), and its good shit also. I don't even smoke, and it's still really entertaining/interesting.
The four other all time best non-comedy series excluding The Wire are
Carnivale
Rome
Six Feet Under
Firefly
Carnivale - Most epic story ever. No kidding. Done by HBO. It was canceled prematurely because viewers are retarded, but the two seasons it does have are good enough to make it top five. IMO if it had run for the scheduled five seasons it would have been the single best show ever no debate no questions no ifs ands or buts.
It was like the writers took a long awesome fantasy novel and put it into one entire series. Most of the first season is introduction to the characters and the world, by the end of the first season it begins to kick off insane, then the second season is just nothing but jaw dropping awesomeness.
It's a hugely original non-traditional fantasy drama with large elements of pseudo-creepiness. One of the main characters, Brother Justin, is so awesome that it's beyond words. He's cooler than Omar, String, and Bunk rolled up into one. Can't say much about him because a significant part of the story is developing his character. All I will say is he is a preacher with a phenomenal secret.
Rome - Also canceled prematurely, also HBO, and also amazing. Plot intermixes real Roman history with fictional Roman characters/events. It is the one series with the largest number of cool characters IMO. Pretty much all the characters are awesome, and Lucius Vorenus will become one of your favorite all time characters. He is a noble, duty-bound Roman soldier who gets royally fucked by life, but because he such a badass he owns. A couple moments with him in Rome are among the most badass on television.
Six Feet Under - Also HBO, but wasn't canceled prematurely, fortunately. It is a pure drama about a traditional yet also non-traditional family revolving around their funeral home. It doesn't sound like much, but its character development is equaled by none, it is superb in every way, and the ending is one of the best television viewing experiences I've had. I was literally staring at my television for minutes after the ending sequence. It was perfect and summed up the show perfectly while leaving a unique perspective on life.
Firefly - This show basically has it all. Also canceled prematurely due to retarded audience. Can't say much about it because it's hard to describe. It's basically a western scifi that achieves everything it sets out to achieve. Canceling this show was one of the worst artistic decisions ever made because it continually keeps the viewer intrigued into its cool mystery and fantasy, with action and comedy and a little romance along the way. Firefly had an extremely devoted cult following, and the creator said that he thinks why the show was so good was because they were always on the brink of cancellation so they made every episode like it was their last.
Let me put it this way. Serenity is the movie sequel to Firefly, which was fantastic, but it still wasn't as good as the series pilot IMO
Oh and "House" is good shit also. However, it really seems like it's always the same storyline with a different illness (House diagnoses, every says he's wrong and diagnoses differently, House gets drunk/takes pills, House then proves his diagnoses was right, and patient is cures/dies before being cured). Damn, that is so accurate of a story outline that it probably needs spoiler tags.
deadwood
oz
lost, 6 feet under, arrested development, the office, 30 rock
House
scrubs
the office

Firefly
Futurama
Arrested development
But top top is South Park
i've never really "got" Southpark. Someone bought me the movie and bits of it were funny, but I dunno. Just don't get it.Quote:

For me, the best comedy series ever: Fawlty Towers, followed closely by Blackadder (not series 1), then maybe Only Fools and Horses.
Stan and Cartman drive a boat into a beaver dam, flooding Beaverton. After blaming Terrorists then George Bush scientists prove it was global warming which caused the flood.

Scenes like this make me love SP.
The Office, Two and a Half Men, My Name is Earl for sitcoms.
Lost one of the best shows I've ever seen. House is very good. Also Prison Break's first season was awesome. After that it kinda fell off, but really the first season had me hooked big time.
Best shows on TV these days are Daily Show and Colbert Report, though. But i think that it's been thanks to a wealth of material recently.
OMG do not see firefly. It is the worst experience you will ever have. I can't believe these assholes would ever recommend it. Imagine you're watching this awesome new movie that has everything. It's got humor, scifi action, a great director, and then bam, with 20 minutes to go it ends abruptly. Not only that, but all the obvious sequels it should have were scrapped as well too. You'll feel a hurt in the world of entertainment you've never felt before. It won't make sense. Why did an awesome movie just stop? Why did it die so quickly? WHY FIREFLY WHY WTF DID I DO TO YOU TO DESERVE THIS
Comedy:
Arrested development
South Park
Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Flight of the Conchords
Drama:
Dexter
First 2 seasons of 24
Sex in the City JKJKJKJKLOL!!!!
I don't really watch drama.
Shows I need to watch:
Weeds
The Wire
The Tudors
Breaking Bad
you get to watch Serenity though
entourage l d o it represents the epitome of the ideal guy life
Burn Notice
if you havent scene it, watch the pilot. Easily the best show on television
withoutout naming shit thas alrdy been mentioned.
Trailer park boys!
Big Love is pretty good also.
and torrentz are the way to go if u dont like to collect dvd's :D
Will641 couldn't post today but he wanted me to tell everyone how much he loves SCRUBS. Frankly I'm getting tired of him rambling on about how it's the best show ever, but he just cannot seem to get enough of it.
Wonder Years / Freaks and Geeks
Season finale was so goooooooooooodQuote:

Top 3:
Entourage
Two and a half men
Top Gear
Honorable mention:
Sliders
Married with children
Sopranos
House
The first few seasons of Lost, 24 and Desperate Housewives
Alias
Anime:
DBZ
School Rumble, School Rumble Second Semester
Bleach
Kenshin: Batoussai Himura (AKA Samurai X)
Prince of Tennis
Full Metal Panic (Fumoffu)
Maburaho
Naruto (around the first 100 episodes, after that it drags)
Gankutsuou
Scrubs (pre-season 8 or 7 maybe) = too good. After that, I'd have to say How I Met Your Mother b/c Neil Patrick Harris is too hilarious. Two & a Half Men & It's Always Sunny are both pretty funny as well (but they can't touch Scrubs). I also liked Weeds a lot.
No way will641 watches Scrubs imo.Quote:

being an online doc, i reccomend scrubs--most of my medical knowledge was obtained by watching that show
i also like gordon ramsay's kitchen nightmares and various other shows about food
Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations is a pretty awesome show.
I heard it was really good. Their commercials told me soQuote:

Curb Your Enthusiasm for the win.
Its the funniest sow ever imo.
Start with season 1 and prepare to LOL repeatedly. Also it gets much better season by season.
FWIW i love Scrubs.
You got a site I can stream Curb Your Enthusiasm off of? No links on STC. :?Quote:

Band of Brothers. I suppose it's more of a mini-series than a TV show, but whatevs.
This goes back, but Lonesome Dove is some really excellent TV. Robert Duvall as Gus McRae plays one of the interesting and likeable characters I've ever seen.
Ditto Deadwood. Speaking of interesting and likeable, Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is a damn hoot...you cocksucker. HBO is so good.
How has Battlestar Galactica not mentioned in this thread? It's a confusing show as all hell if you try to jump in midstream
But when Caprica has nuclear weapons going off all over the planet within the first 15 minutes of the first episode, the show has you by the balls and its shaking you threatening to crush them if you don't watch every lust filled minute.
I'm a Friday Night Lights fan myself.
And I loved Jericho last year.
I'm really looking foward to "Better off Ted"
FIREFLY
Freaking-Firefly!!!
You can even watch it for free, whenever you want: hulu.com/firefly.
It has amazing character development, witty humor, and just a great story all around. A crime that Fox F*ed up so much. You'll love it though.
Bitch at FOX, don't bitch at firefly. That's like saying "OMG you stupid bitch; why did you get slapped around by your abusive husband. What did I do to deserve seeing you like this?!?!?!"Quote:

I watched an episode and it was alright. The Mom's boyfriend was pretty funny in a Christopher Guest sort of way and the writing is in the Arrested Development style. In other words, it's not the most creative thing in the world.Quote:

Sons of anarchy is prob my fave currently airing show.
Battlestar Galactica sucks assballs. Fucking amazing premise, one of the best ever; but written by a 12 year old.
any Flash Forward fans out there? not my favorite show ever by far, but I'm intrigued enough to DVR it and have seen every episode.
Yeah I've DVRed every episode as well.Quote:

Entourage, Lost, The Office, and the new HBO show Bored To Death. If you havent seen BTD, you gotta find a torrent. The first season just wrapped up, and its really good, I predict emmys.
Top gear season 14 is underway
I like this a lot too, I just anger at the fact that he always (predictably) uses American measurements that leave me clueless, but its a great show that's very informative at the same time.Quote:

Oh, and anything with Jason Schwartzman is so fucking money. If you haven't already, watch Bored to Death. It's on HBO On Demand for those of you that have it.Quote:
