Doing a short film. It's something I've always wanted to do. Here's the poster I just made for it.

Gonna start shooting it this week. I have no hired talent whatsoever. Just me and my roommate. Gonna be a lot of shooting in the dark {edit: erm i meant that figuratively, not as in filming at night}. Any tips you can give me?

Make sure you get someone on board who really understands lighting. And make sure you take lots of shots of stuff you don't necessarily need, but are part of the movie. I forget the term for those shots. But they are invaluable in the editing room when you need some filler to make a camera transition less awkward.

then get shooting, learning by doing = a good thing
If you can't lay tracks or use a steadycam, opt for still frames whenever possible. If you're using a tripod without oil damping, try to avoid too much side-to-side movement also.
Use a decent shotgun mic if possible.
If you're shooting outside, try to shoot a couple of hours before sunset. Avoid direct sunlight like the plague.
Just my opinion: keep it clean and simple. I've seen so many horrible artsy shorts... you don't need to shove the lens up someones nose, or change from frog to bird perspective every second cut just to stand out. :D
The only really memorable shorts I've ever seen are those by Godard - not counting episode movies. Check them out... some very neat ideas to steal there.
I'm not a filmmaker, but I have two friends who study it, and I shot a couple of zombi movies way back when. - I still remember that after we looked at the first day of shooting back home we decided to redo everything with proper lighting and still images. If you just place a camera somewhere it's always going to look like a home video, no matter what camera you have. But a video camera is just fine in the right hands - Lars Van Trier comes to mind.
