And this isn't stuff we have yet to figure out, it's stuff we already know, but it's confined to academia and textbooks, and the public holds those in contempt since it tells them they're wrong

WRT politicians and ignorance, some of them are, but IMO their policies are more about being politicians than being stupid. The two areas in which the highest IQs gravitate towards are the public sector and sciences (things like journalism and professors), and I think that politicians are among those.
However, the reason for politicians doing stupid shit all the time is simply for their electorate. It's not actually possible to be a political representative and not cater to your base, and this is why I think we see so much dumbassery from politicians. The problem is the voters. The fact that so many of us don't use our brains about political policies, yet we still vote. I honestly have no solution for this other than encouraging personal integrity and teaching critical thinking in school.
Look at it this way: George Bush was voted into office. Twice. People love to get down on Shrub and how horrible a president he was (including me), but we're missing the point if we don't ultimately put the blame on ourselves, on the voters who were uneducated and egotistical enough to make Bush their leader in the first place.
Another example is in this current economic crisis could have been easily avoided if voters did not so easily succumb to misdirection, hand waving, and false logic. There were actually Senators who voted against the Gramm Leach Bliley Act in 1999 (which is the main culprit for the financial collapse), and they voted nay because they realized how detrimental it would be to the economy. But nobody cared or listened, we all just went about our merry way being coddled and promised riches, and because we never crunch the numbers ourselves (or listen to those who do), we didn't change our ways until it was too late
But even then, the economic change now isn't that much. The financial regulations brought about by the Great Depression were so great and behind so much motivation that they created the most powerful economy and middle class the world had ever seen for decades. But as people started forgetting about the GD, they began letting corporate lobby change politicians' positions, and due to this we have seen over the last 40 years massive deregulation and income inequality which is completely responsible for this current recession.
But now we have certain safeguards to recessionary times. Safeguards like unemployment insurance, federal deposit insurance, monetary inflation, and the knowledge that allowing financial institutions to collapse is absolutely unacceptable. And because of these safeguards, and all the rest we've learned from the Great Depression, Japan's Lost Decade, and other recessions, we are not in dire straits. We are not in a depression even remotely as severe as the GD, and we're not going to get there. This is great, but this also means that the public will to change the system is also not there.
Back when FDR took office, and the Democrats sweeped Congress in 1932, things were SO bad that everybody flung their hands in the air and allowed FDR and the Dems nearly full reign to push their agenda. Nothing had worked and even the opposing party resigned from obstructing. This allowed the Dems to push a ton of legislation that would put an end to the Depression, and last for decades to come. But do we have this now? Or is half the country and half the Congress attempting to obstruct the same kind of agenda that history has shown to work? This is quite the testament to how bad things actually aren't. They're bad, don't get me wrong, but the GD was way worse, but because of that the entire populous was motivated enough to fix shit and do it right. Today, we don't see that. We see half the country and half the Congress unable to open up a history textbook or unable to talk to an economics professor, and go about their merry way of lies and obstruction.
This has actually all happened before in well documented US history. We let corporate conservatism to fuck everything up by deregulating markets and stealing all the wealth creation, then we ask social liberalism to fix everything by re-regulating those markets and re-instituting income equality. But this time, I don't think it's going to work that well because the electorate is so proud of their ignorance. Something as simple as letting the Bush tax cuts expire is the end of the world. Yet the science shows that the most economically sound tax system involves increasing taxes on the wealthy by about 5x what letting the Bush cuts expire would do.
The ultimate solution, however, is to fix campaign contributions and lobbying. Simply making them transparent or capping contributions would be by far the best thing for this country because it would mean that the rich folk can't buy politicians, and thus the vast majority of the problems that befall non-rich people would disappear. The unfortunate thing is that this is never going to happen. The GOP used to be the only vestige for the wealthy special interests, but they now have a rather strong strangle hold on the Blue dogs or the conservadems or whatever you wanna call them, the 1/3rd of the Democratic Party that are essentially secret Republicans. There simply would not be enough votes.
