Hey guys. What does everyone think of the connect with facebook login option?
Notice it? Use it?
[x] noticed it
[x] scared to use it - is it going to mercilessly spam either my wall or the wall of my friends?
What is Face Book?
Remove this evil blight from FTR, pls. I know Xianti has a social media company but this is sick.
Blocked with NoScript.
No, connecting your ftr forum account with facebook will not spam your wall or newsfeed.
Having the login basically just streamlines the process for new forum users when they create an account.
What data are you referring to? With the connect with facebook, ftr gets permission to extract data from facebook, following the permission and privacy settings of the user. You get the option to share things on facebook like you do any other site then, but it shouldn't automatically share things.
Please share your concerns.
By putting a Facebook app on your site, you're allowing Facebook access to the visiting habits of your users. Facebook's 'Like This' button is tracking you | THINQ.co.uk
I'm not concerned, yet. The amount of data Facebook takes on me is what I still consider acceptable. However, some of your users may not consider that an acceptable level. Some people are very particular about their information being shared.
I "liked" my MiniFTOPS article and it showed up on my facebook wall. It wasn't very obvious, though, which I thought was good.
FTR isn't exactly on my list of top 10 most secure websites. I run AdBlock and No-Script on here because of past ad-delivered malware, and I don't trust any new widget you plonk on here 'just because'.
My Facebook profile is locked down just about as far as I can lock it down and, as galap noted above, Facebook's widgets do a lot more than they look like they do. I don't trust them one bit and don't particularly want to be linked to FTR on Facebook, thanks very much.

Bottom line: You guys are forcing me to take steps to ensure that Facebook Connect is disabled when I browse FTR, and that pisses me off.
I'm not sure what the article you posted in referring to here, but this is simply not the case. There is absolutely no way for us to know who you are on facebook, unless you opt in.Quote:
There will be new user controls made available, but this is a new experience: this makes Facebook Connect opt-out instead of opt-in.
gmml, it's not FTR I'm worried about. You guys know who I am on Facebook anyway.
Look, I've registered my displeasure. I refuse to use Facebook Connect and Like buttons and will continue to do so, but if you guys think this will increase your bottom-line then what I say doesn't matter much anyway. I had just hoped that FTR wouldn't be yet another website I had to lock down.
My other problem with it is how many junior rocket scientists are you going to get that sign up for the first time with their Facebook credentials and then regret it later. This is a gambling website, after all.
not according to the disclaimer at the bottom of the page!
you mean the one next to the privacy policy?
You must not have read my link. You enabled it for all users by installing their widget on your site. Facebook puts a cookie in your user's browsers now which tracks them whether they're a Facebook user or not. Yeah it doesn't display things on your profile. But you have no idea how that data may be used by Facebook, who have proven themselves to be pretty close to the line in going too far with user's private details on a few occasions.
That combined with the link Warpe provided which explains how Facebook will share that data with sites they have approved, not sites which you have approved, is kinda scary.
