odds experiment

i was getting bored yesterday at work, had nothing to do.so i remembered odds in poker and decided to do a little experiment.

pre flop the most common cases in which we found ourseves are :

aprox: 50/50
66/33
80/20


so for 50/50 i flliped a coin multiple times, the result amazed me... i flliped the same side of the coin 23 times in a row.... so even the 50/50 odds , there is the chance i could lose 23 times in a row.

for 66/33 and 80/20 i used some little coloured balls from a game, also i was amazed by the results, with 3/1 odds to extract a red ball, i extractted the yellow one 17 times in a row. with 5/1 odds to get the red ball, i got the yellow one 30 times in a row.


i did this all day long trying to see a pattern, but there is none,,,, i got all kind of results in all 3 cases and the only conclusion is that variance gets herself stabilized on a number of extractions ( dealt boards) bigger then we can count or experiment in a day and the only thing i can do in order to win at poker is that pre flop and after each betting round i am the favourite, that means reading my opps, establishing very accurate ranges and calculating my odds to win as close to the reality as i can and also try to play the same money on odds to get the variance right, if i play 5$ AA now and i lose, then i play AA with 2$ and i win is not ok, i need to play aprox the same amount every time. this way, even i will get nk of bad beats, losing hands, i know i played as a favourite and at some point variance will work out for my profit cause this is the only way it can be.

sorry if its not in the right place , or if it is silly for many, but i think there are players like me that have to realise what i said here and this is why i wrote it :)

And yea losing any number of flips or 80:20s is possible but over a decent sample loosing a ton in the row is probable, or for sure.

Also are those numbers made up cuz (1/6)^30 is a really really small chance and I doubt you did this millions of times. Like 4.5 e-24 unlikely.

Either way variance is gross but it's what keeps the poker economy alive so we should appreciate it.

numbers are not made up.... i am a cab driver, i stayed free for about 4 h yesterday and this is all i did. just happend to get this runs on each case. i know chances are small for those runs, but they happend, there is the same chance in poker to lose 15 times in a row AA all in pre, but it happend to me, have it in PT3. ( lost it 15 times in a row, but the % for my AA play is 85% won in
181 AA hands over 15000 hands played, from PT3 stats also )
i am damn happy i got those runs, that proved one more time that i just have to be patient, calm and accurate in calculating and i will be winning no matter the jackasses i play or what bad runs i get.

Read up on basic statistics (find a free online Stats 101 type class). Your tests are "independent events", but the more often you perform the test the more likely the average will be close to the expected value.

yes, but it is possible, not impossible :) as long as there is a chance, doesnt matter how small infinite it is, that thing can happend. this is what i am saying. and you are saying the same thing, the odds event A to happend are 0,00000000000000000000000000000000001% lets say and we say that it wount happend to us because the chances are so small, but the odds exist so the event will happend at one point and it could repeat itself cause the chances are the same . like flip a coin, it denst matter you flipped it 10000000000000000 times and flipped the same side every time.... the chances for the next flip to get the same side are exatly the same: 50% :) so we could have the same side for biliion time over and over, chances at every flip are the same :)

When flipping a coin, the side that starts by facing down is slightly more likely to land up.

I would imagine it depends on the angle, height, rotation and where you catch it, or if you let it drop to the floor. Assuming consistency, it's reasonable to assume that one is indeed more likely than the other, but I don't see how we know which one until we have a sample.

Assume heads starts down. Then in order, the side that's up once we flip is

heads, tails, heads, tails, heads, tails.....

So at any point in time, heads is up >= 50% of the time. The fewer times it flips, the higher the edge. You can probably find experiments for this kind of thing in Google.

sample no sample, odds, probabilities, they all are relative and just to give another reason to fold or bet.

my point with the post was this:

you can be favourite with 99,99% chances, but this doesnt make you the winner! as small as it is, there is still the chance you will lose, but playing always as the favourite will make you the winner!


you all knew this before i said it, but for me is like a new light in my game ! :)

I knew this before I even knew poker. But then I understand probability, I was pretty good at Maths at school.

Your claim of losing with AA 15 times in a row is quite something.... to say it's a one in 30billion chance means if you are dealt AA and get your money in with 80% equity 30billion times, you should expect one run of 15 losses. You'd also expect to make enough money to buy the solar system.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but it's only happened to a handful of people at best. UNLUCKY SIR.

Odds are displayed differently though. If the probability of throwing a six is 1 in 6, the odds are 1:5

I've been losing with AA over 100k total hand samples before. It happens, no big deal.

Alot of stuff I've read indicates that random walks tend to naturally be way more streaky than people expect. People just don't have a good idea of what randomness really looks like. We always assume it should be 'fairer' and more uniform than it really is.

I like how OP was paid to play with his balls all day.

I lost against AA yesterday with AK, allin on flop of KK5, shit happens.

When reaching for the yellow or red balls (.....) your hand can actually recognize the texture a bit differently if you had just picked the yellow one and you grip it again. It's not anything major, but there could be slight indentations on the ball, or you can be picking the general area you thought the ball landed when you put it back in the bag (or whatever you used.

Now, if you closed you eyes, threw the ball into the bag, shook the bag, and then pick a ball very fast (by not shuffling your hand around in the bag), you probably wouldn't have picked the yellow one that many times.


Your 50/50 is too small of a sample. You'd need thousands and thousands of coin flips to measure it out.

Although I did just flip a coin 20 times, and after changing the height, speed and location of where I caught it I got 19 tails in a row and 1 heads at the end. (in before sample size lol).

(It's also random chance, or variance)
