So it used to be that whenever I linked to a .jpg, an image tag would automatically be put around the link instead of a URL tag.

Hmm, programmer said it wouldn't make sense to do this and it's most likely that never happened...
you can click the img button and paste the link in there and then it will wrap img tags around there. but i'm fairly certain that it always defaulted to url tags around any kind of external link in a post.
