two table tournament - chip leader facing short stack shove

I used to know this stuff, but my tourney skills have faded since I stopped playing online.

Blinds are $400/800. 11 players left in tourney, 5 at my table. Home game.

Villain is a very good player, understands short stack play and ICM. He is a short stack with 8k in chips. I am chip leader with ~21k. Blinds will go up in less than a minute.

Hero is BB (21k). Folds to Villain on the button (8k) who shoves. His range is literally any two cards. SB folds.

What are my calling requirements? I think it's something like A8+, 66+? How far off am I?

I think it is good to call that. if you loose you will still have 13k and i don-t think he will have stronger hand

doubt payouts make much difference, but you should mention.

your range is tight. Start using a tool like stove or the one above. Folding KQ, for example, would be criminal. K2o is a (small) favorite over a random hand. QJ even more so.


You are being laid a price, so anytime you have ~50% equity you should at least consider a call. You might pass on a few close spots on the idea you can put those chips to better use later, ICM etc, but I would never pass a 60/40.

All external factors say call wide as well. It is clear you will see this guy again and you'd like him to know you will call wide in the future so he doesn't jam as much. And if you win you eliminate what I assume is the best player in the tourney. If not you are likely a dog in this lineup and I'd just try and play big pots anyway.

EDIT - also worth noting his range is probably not ATC, I would remove AA and probably other large pairs.
