Thinking now I'm very comfortable in folding in these spots as see it as saving 60c rather than losing 40c.

I like just calling the turn. The 5s isn't very good for us, but he's offering us odds that are next to checking.

[T] You might get (flat-)called by worse but it's not very likely. Which worse do you have in mind?
I suppose you might get people doing that with 1-Spade draws (esp if they have a pair or 6/7 to boost it a bit) ..but then what do you do when he bets properly on the River? Lower pairs just aren't calling with that board unless they're really bad (in which case look them up with something stronger)

Definitely flat-call that 2c: it's either weak and folding or strong and trying to incite a bigger raise from you (obviously you never fold to these micro-bets unless you really have dross).

I think the only thing you can do with those 2c bets are to raise to just under pots every time:

1) If they are strong they will raise over the top and then you're folding a good majority of the time.

2) If they are weak they will fold a good majority of the time.

3) If they are on a draw they will call a good majority of the time and we are getting good value from their draws (as long as we can fold on later streets).

I tend to treat a 1bb bet as a check. What would I have done on turn if villain checked? Would I have bet or checked behind? I probably b/f, because there's value from Qx, and any decent spade he might have, and any gutshot + shit fd combo he doesn't want to fold. This turn isn't great obviously, but it's not a disaster, it's not like he always has a flush here. idk why we'd check behind turn if he checks, so idk why we'd call a 2c bet instead of "raising". It's 2nl, he can easily be a fish with T9 JT J9 with spade here, he can have a pocket pair and intends to get to showdown... his range isn't that strong imo, at least not when we face the 2c turn bet. I'd "raise" turn, only I wouldn't consider it a raise. Just a standard bet.

If you think you have to respond with a proper bet every time then you're playing their game. Treat it as a nearly-check until you have a read on what it's actually telling you. While the pot odds say always call it's not quite a check.

1) If they are strong you just gave them an extra potful --and why would they raise when they can do it again on another street? (and make you think they're drawing so their river bet looks like a bluff to you)
2) if they are weak you don't want them folding!
3) sure.. it might pay off this 1-option-of-3 but what if they bluff-raise you? you already said you would fold ..and if they are paying attention (ok that's a bit of a stretch) then they'll soon be doing this with only their strong hands or bluff-re-raising everything.

Certainly you should pot-raise them sometimes but that's only your response every time if you've worked out what these bets mean with considerable confidence.

So is this one of those times? With an unknown villain I'm inclined to go for the smaller pot and see what the River brings from him.

Looks fine. I guess this is one of only a few turn cards that we should flat though. Typical spaz fish will then pot river with flushes and straights, so we could fold pretty comfortably or call off versus a small bet.
