Bluff all the way to the river? How to do effectively?

This bluff of mine wasn't exactly the most fancy or anything, but force works sometimes too. Is there a nice way to pull off an effective flop to river bluff?

You've got some balls, man. Unless I had a very good read on the opponent, I wouldn't expect your river bet to push him off a real hand with that much money being called in previous rounds.

Usually when someone simply calls, they are either chasing or have a middle pair that they think may survive. What hand did you put him on?

Your jump to a 400 bet on the turn was about right, and I'm sure you thought he would drop out on that one rather than calling you. You were in a tough spot at that point because a large bet versus the pot size is the only thing I can imagine being consistently successful at pushing him off of a medium pair. But you only had enough chips left to check or go AI, in my opinion.

Luckily for you, the $500 bet worked. Perhaps he was chasing a flush or straight, but if he had an overpair you would have been called.

I do this at times as well, but usually I reserve it just for when I put them on a draw (that they aren't likely to hit, and therefore are likely to fold on the river) after they call my bluff on the flop. Looks like they had a straight draw on this one, but I probably would've laid off after the flop call, as it wasn't that obvious that they were on a draw. They could have easily been slowplaying a set here.

First Posting. I agree you had to have a great read on this person's play to make that river bet.
Now I'd like to thank everyone for this forum. I've improved my play already just reading your post and replies for the last couple weeks. Hope to increase skills enough to contribute in the future.

I put this guy on some sort of draw. I knew, at best, he had middle pair. I observed him constantly stealing blinds and playing less than marginal hands. Just something about him told me that he wasn't going to last in that hand.
