tilt inducing nightmare - i thought i was developing some immunity! wrong... already down 3 buyins for the session (thanks sets!), and then this great read vs a 70-30 uber-fish who proceeded to lose his $200 over the next three orbits...

Ouch. It must be harder when you're a good player. When you're a complete novice you can think well it evens out, but when you're a decent player - you're not going to make those same dumb plays as him so it must be annoying.

Do you often get paid off by people that raise like that with second pair, I mean do those type of 'fish' crop up regularly at these levels?

I'm not yet a good poker player. I've got a grasp of some basics and am working to get better. There are a number of players here that are good, one day I would like to be as good and as successful as they. I'm lucky in that Ive learnt that this forum is one of the best resources around for improving my game. Just so long as my ego can handle being told I'm wrong, so far so good! I look back at some of the hands I've posted and laugh at my naivety and stupidity, the hands I'm posting now must often look equally as stupid to some of the good players here. If they think a play is stupid, I take notice. I try and understand why they think that way. I slowly improve.

It does even out, I got my chips in as about 80-20 favourite (he had five standard outs = queens and tens). 80-20 favourite means that I'm going to lose here 1/5 times. Another ten would have also been bad for me, but the nature of the suckout (the straight!) was what tilted me. I want the players I play against to make these stupid plays. Because I play with a large bankroll relative to the stakes I play, HANDS LIKE THIS DON"T MATTER!!! think of that as another lesson in bankroll management.

No.
It's not that common at any limit for a player to go so crazy with second pair. JQ maybe. This guy was a maniac, and I knew it. He also knew that there was a good chance I would fold anything less than two pair here, and I did seriously consider folding scared of KT. I doubt he'll ever play poker again. Most players at 50nl and 100nl are wannabe TAGs or Nits. Occasionally you find someone trying to play a LAG game. It's not that common to find anyone good, but most of them are good enough to beat at least 5nl and 10nl... They should be easy to beat at a solid rate, I'm winning over big samples at 50nl and 100nl, but I have probably earned nearly as much from rakeback/bonuses/promotions while playing at these levels.

I feel like I'm playing well. But my bankroll is only creeping up very slowly. I'm running bad - here's my all-in success vs EV for the last 2 1/2 days....

I'm losing a lot of 80-20 races. Worst was a 95-5 when my AA overpair to Jc6c on a TsQd2h flop got all in only to hit running sixes.... meh. So I should be up 6 buyins more than I am. Feck.

Dang dude that's rough....but on the bright side, when I have those kinds of runs I am down buyins and not up LOL.

HEM, yep. Quite a nice tool. I'm keeping my PT3 database up to date with my hands as well though - but I've given up on PT3 for HUD use until they fix it.

In bankroll news, I got some rakeback today, so I'm up about 10 buyins for the month now - but thanks mostly to a bonus and rakeback. I've got my bankroll scattered around the place, $2800 on FT at the moment (and about $3k on other sites). I'll get that FT balance to $3k and move back up to 100nl. I'm questioning whether withdrawing money from poker was a good move after all, it's looking bored in a savings account!

Good news is that the adjustments I've made to my game seem to make my table image worse, and to make playing easier... I'm starting to focus more and more on the players I'm against rather than the situations I'm in - that seems to be super-important. I still feel as though poker-understanding is eluding me, soulreading is a long way off. Oh well, at least I'm making money ;)

so i decided to lag my way to profits. I went a little bit far on the loose side of the equation though. Oh well, I'll get the 5 buyins back sooner or later.

29/22 at FR is suicide unless you are a postflop god....the TAGbots will start picking on you relentlessly....or avoid you altogether.

I ran ok for a while... Hit some nasty beats as well (AA<AJ allin pre, etc), but I think you're right.
I normally run something like 16-12, moving slowly towards 18-15 (which is already kinda lag for FR at tilt 50nl+)

Isn't it funny that we are considered LAG? Couple of different times I have mentioned that. 12/8 used to be a NIT, now he's a TAG.....

I think if you drop to just a few of the "right" tables, 29/22 would be quite profitable, especially against a multitabling TAGbot with a HUD....

yeah, tagfish == nits.... I think that 29/22 would be hard, but ok, running up to 4 tables. But I'm not convinced that my postflop play is up to that.

I've been playing with HEM. It's a nice app, and I'm finding that I've still got huge leaks that are easily fixed.

That does suck, but it wouldn't have sucked had you raised PF. I like to open with these hands in the CO and pick up some easy money ;)

this is the sort of hand that tilts me. I get shorthanded against a known fish, then get it in good and deep.... this morning's session sucked...
in fact, this whole month's session has sucked. long term ev is ok, this month i'm down a lot on all-in EV.
I'm down too many buyins to situations like this one - I'm barely breaking even after rakeback... I want to win an 80-20, one time!!!

Every time I try for a limp reraise with AA like villain did, the same thing happens to me, no one raises LOL.

nice flop flat in Hand 2.

I got some EV back! Villain is a reg with loads of history against me, and knows I could have AK here - I figure his range after the flop call here is JJ+/AK so I decide to rep AK and let him get it on... hindsight and I'm not convinced he's betting all his range here - oh well. River is some nice +ve variance and I quit the 30 minute session shortly after - 600 hands for 3 buy-ins, and I got a nice addition to my notes on this guy.

Almost a shame that I'm moving back up again shortly - plan was to play 50nl until FT roll reached 3k, oops - forgot to move up!
It's turning into a decent month now, even after all that shitty variance and running bad (still 6buyins behind EV) - thanks rakeback/bonuses/getting in the hands!

Hand 1 there are enough draws in his range I guess, but I expect to lose this one a lot.

I don't like hand 2 at all. I can see the flop check (although leading is good too). That turn bet sux, I bet you were trying to induce but when you get the raise you want you have to shove over it.

I really think you need to find a raise on the flop or turn and have it all in before the river.


Hand 4 I think you know where you went wrong there, very lucky. Button's call on that board SHOULD mean monster even though it didn't.

meh i like to let him keep potting into us although it's pretty scary and i could see a fold, but he has JJ+ 89 and random bluffs in his range. It depends how bad he is really.

aggression frequency % is how often I was aggressive i.e. the percentage of times i bet or raised when i had the option. I think this is pretty high, cos I do a lot of folding...

Clearing $1k a week seems easily doable (the last few weeks anyway, and that's including some crazy experimental tilt downswings!)

unfortunately this means that after my real job (18-20 hrs/week, quitting isn't an option that I'm giving any consideration), climbing, running, & everything else that life entails - I find that I don't end up doing as much of the cool stuff as I should be.

Working part-time wasn't so that I could sit more often in front of a computer at home. So, decision time. How much time should i spend playing poker between now and April when my contract finishes. After that I'll be going poker pro for a while regardless, likely to support some sort of climbing/surfing/travel buzz. In the meantime? guess i'll figure it out over the next few weeks...

So like April is a long time away. If your winning at a decent rate and seeing a decent amount of hands (as i believe you are) reaching 200nl seems easily doable. The sooner you move to 200nl the sooner you will begin to adjust to the play at that level and produce a sick win rate (not saying move up ASAP but $10k seems about right) which will put you in a far better position after April.

How much should you be playing? I would think as much as possible. Think of it as a small sacrifice now for an awsome return later. Living it up doing what you love would be awsome but not as awsome as living it up doing what you love and being financially secure. If it turns out 200nl is not for you then fuck it play 100nl but wouldn't it be better to find out now then moving up when poker is your main source of income and thus far more stressful?

As for keeping only $5k online how easily can you fund your poker accounts? The way the american dollar is going and is likely to go it may be prudent to keep as little online as possible. Obviously keep a BR but having a separate bank account in NZ dollars connected to your neteller account or something might be worth the conversation fees just in case.

Poker play itself is feeling light and relaxed at the moment, seems as though I've switched to cruise control

I've barely played the last week - hanging out with friends and beach sifting at the other end of the country instead. Played a nice laptop-screen only session 7-tabling for around an hour and realised how relaxed and easy-reading it is to play so few tables. Running good doesn't do any harm either! (5-bet pushed QQ based on reads and finally I'm applying some theory about range blockers - anyway, nice to get it in full stacked against AK & AJ, and to hold!!!)

I played the Full Tilt iron man, it confirmed what the FTR $500 added suggested - I suck at MTTs. Busted 120th/330 when AJs ran into KK with M=4... Doesn't sound so bad, but I'm an MTT nit and need to play more hands/situations. I am crap at dealing with changing blind structures and with <100bb - too many hands of full ring cash where I'm used to sitting between 100 and 300 bb deep. Once I'm in push-fold mode I'm not so bad again. So, another sub-project. I'm going to play the occasional low stakes MTT, buyins $10-$40 I guess, and try to get a little better. I'll also play a few more sngs...

You speak wise words here - I'm going to move up to 200nl in December, see how I fare. I'm comfortably rolled for it and - You're right!! - if it goes well, then it's a great decision. The main reason I'm not moving up is that I know that I still suck, but I'm realising that even some of the winning mid-stakes regs suck - so maybe moving up isn't totally stupid. Worst case scenario I blow 7 buyins quickly and move back down to lick my wounds and hopefully have a better understanding of my major weaknesses. More likely is that I spend a few weeks losing lightly, and almost staying breakeven after rakeback... then move down to improve my game before moving up again

I'm more concerned with how easily I can withdraw from my poker accounts ;) My main approach to date is looking ugly, so I'm going to investigate some other options this week. I'm going to further examine 3-bet sizing. One thing I think (hands 2, 3, & 4) is that 3-betting is by default smaller when the standard open is 3.5bb rather than 4bb. Also, any 3-bet >pot is bad cos of the bet pot button. I'll look further at 3-bet sizing, I may be going a little light in general (generally pot less 1-2 xbb)

hand 5 - Agreed that leaving him with that little behind is unusual, but he's bad and won't realise that he's pot committed now. I wanted to get a call not a fold, and i don't think he's calling his stack to a flop re-raise here

$3.2k poker profit so far this month (tables + rakeback), will need to hit a decent heater to get my first taste of a $5k month now - but that's fine.

Summer is arriving, I'm going south for a week to a juggling festival that somehow incorporates a 2-day rave, I'm doing more rock climbing and should also be hitting the water more often. A friend won a marathon three weeks ago and pointed out last night over a few beers that I'll only run faster if i train, he has a point. And work is still taking up 18-20hrs/week.

A post w/ 3 of my top 4 favorite things in it: distance running, rock climbing and winning 4k at poker. Now, if you'd just find out how to get laid, you'd have the perfect life!!

Yeah, i got a friend that finished his law degree last year and hes a online player and he thought about the same. Its quite a hazy area really... I havent heard of a case of the ird taking anyone to court or anything before, so yer like u said its just 'gambling' heh. :wink:

haven't played poker for a week.
The rave was 14hrs (10pm-12noon) rather than two days. The festival was amazing. I juggled. I also hung out with this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aSkFlF3_M4 , who I've kinda known for about 13 years... we talked some poker and i think i translated some of his street-performance/diablo philosophy into a form that i can profitably apply to poker - may post more on that later...

I've been slipping into some bad habits. For the next little while I will focus on:

1) paying attention - Being in IRC while grinding is ----EV, so is posting on FTR, writing e-mails, etc.
2) Reviewing sessions
3) Posting and commenting on hands
4) Studying
5) Discipline = positional play and folding
6) Trusting reads
7) playing only up to 13 tables, more than this and i feel my edge start to slip
8) stopping sessions if i feel I'm playing badly
9) not playing when i shouldn't be playing - whatever the reason

I'll post updates at 10k hand intervals, and am thinking about posting biggest hands per session with discussion/commentary

I think I need to re-assess my poker goals as well. I can ignore 1-9 above and still clear $2k/month, which is about what i've been aiming for. Instead i will focus on how much more i can clear if i do what i should be doing.

oh, and my biggest two (1xwinning and 1xlosing) hands from the last week:

initial raiser is 25-12 and has folded to 3-bets 4/4 so far. He also has squeeze/iso tendencies.
The limp-caller is a 36-9 type prone to monkey-checked-to syndrome. When the turn gives me top and bottom + Top kicker & the flush draw I'm always getting my money in against this guy. I figure this the best way to do so. The turn 2 really narrows his range, I think he plays a lot of hands like this, and now there's only one hand I'm scared of (he raises 99 pre)

One thing that helps me play goot, is before starting a session, I try to drop all expectation of results, and just focus on every single decision I have to make. I consistently have better results when I do this.

If I notice myself saying "fek I gotta make this monies back", that's my cue to bail on the session.

i may have made one too many withdrawals - leaving my FT balance at 16buyins (and the arrogance that i assumed this would be fine for 14-tabling) - so i ended up adjusting my game.... anyway, i had $1k stagnating on my neteller account, so now i'm back to not worrying about whether the auto-rebuy will work if i get stacked.

I need to look back through this year - i don't have losing weeks very often, they bug me...

to make myself feel better - it's been just over 12 months since i made my first FT deposit of $600. I guess this sort of $$ harvesting is sustainable - kinda like FT fisheries management.... deposits in red, withdrawals in blue - $2700 in deposits, a little over $13k in withdrawals...

I guess i'll do this for the year's play across all sites at the end of April 2009...

i figured out what i've been doing wrong this last week - i've lost the fold button post-flop, and i've been raising/betting too much...
sounds easy to fix, here's hoping. Discipline... and a 14 buyin down swing to recover!!! although downswing is a misnomer - to me those are about variance, and a lot of this one is a variance/bad play combo

november my worst poker income month in ages somewhere around $1700 US. Funny, a year ago I would have been over the moon with that!!!

I'm playing a very simple game at the moment, too small a sample size to say for sure that it's working as this month is proving to be very light on hands played.

So far it's 8500 hands of 100nl returning 6.5ptBB/100. Running a little behind EV. Nice to be earning $100 an hour for time at the tables so far this month.

i'm going to try and make less mistakes more often.

also, i thought about trying out some coaching - briefly. limp slowrolled my way into the money in a loyalty freeroll for $80.
I suck at mtts.

I was about 15th in chips once the field was half gone, 200/400 left and 90 pay. And then?!?! dunno, i get lost in mid-game. I'm fine for the first 4 or 5 blind levels, then fine again (i think) ifi get down to m= 5 or 6. I'm crap at using a decent stack to stay a decent stack.

Guess that's why/cos i play cash 100+bb deep and auto-rebuy, plus have never studied or played mtts even remotely seriously.

The month is still going reasonably light on poker, but results are fine. Still running around 5ptBB/100 and a little behind ev.
About $2180 profit so far this month. $1750 tables, $100 payment from rake race last month, $80 from the freeroll, and $250 rakeback. (quick edit after my 200nl table paid dividends!)

halfway through the month and i haven't even played 15k hands yet. This is going to be a light month for volume....

running into the tops of too many ranges recently, second nuts against a maniac? no good.... etc...

varies a lot. I normally have FTR open if i'm online, and post/comment on occasional hands - but don't consider this study. FTR probably occupies 15-30mins/day?

I play between 800 and 1.3k hands an hour. This month I've played 20k hands - so that's about 20hrs for the month so far. Usually the hours/day is distorted cos once in a while I'll find a rainy day that I'm not working and pull ten hours at the tables.
working only 18hrs a week allows this. I plan to go sorta pro next year (i.e. no work for a while other than poker) - maybe playing only 20hrs a week though.

As for study - it varies a lot. I should study more. I tend to find a topic I want to study hard and then nuke it over 4-6hrs during a week. This involves a bunch of internet forum and strat browsing, saving relevant links and then often printing them for reading and note-taking with caffeine. Often the catalyst is a post on FTR - especially one liners from Fnord, nutsinho, deanglow, spenda, others +, and even more importantly, I'll often spend some solid time on posts from Spoon. I'd say 10hrs a month of proper study is more than I'd normally do

your post is interesting. I do manage to keep doing a lot, but poker definitely has an impact on my life - and not always positive. I've been taking care not to let poker stop me sleeping/eating/working optimally, and especially to keep going out and doing the things that make life magic. $$$ are far from everything - especially when walking back along the beach with aching muscles sipping beer with climbing-buddies as the sun is setting, spinning shit about the amazing climbing session just finished and those yet to come....

roadtripping the xmas-new year buzz fantastic has rolled back home this arvo. Things are feeling good.

December was about 25k hands of running and playing bad.
Add some rakeback, somehow some net table profits, some bonus/loyalty thing, and it was still profitable.
