I don't think it is GOAT, but one that is hugely underrated: Event Horizon.
As for Avatar... just.. meh... I hate hate hate the art direction of the bluefags. Everything involving a space marine, and the environment (the floating mountains was fucking bananas) is awesome. But every scene that focused on the bluefags made me want to gag.
Wuf, can you start doing a weekly movie recommendation in this thread, please?
Lately, I have watched a few movies that you recommended in this thread: http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...rs-182691.html
I really enjoyed every thing so far...
Rope - good (a bit old for me though)
The Proposition - Agree that it is the best western. Loved it
Before Sunrise - Awesome romance
Evil - So good
Spring, Summer, Fall, winter, and Spring
Match Point
I am addicted to movies right now...I need moar!
Glad you like my recs. Rope is a bit old, but it works due to format IMO. I really hate old movies for several reasons, but Rope is the only one from the 40s I like
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is probably my no.2 western. So that's my next rec
I hear Before Sunset is even better than Before Sunrise, but I won't watch it
I think that makes three people from this board that have watched Evil on my rec. All loved it of course. It's the epitome of being really good and really cool without being shoved up its own ass of importance
Watched Amelie over Christmas. It's s charming little film.
That's actually a pretty big spoiler, pls edit.
PATHS OF GLORY
I didn't think that it was that big of a spoiler, if a spoiler at all.
Anyways, I watched it, it was fine, but it definitely did not compare to the first one. There was one huge plot hole that I just couldn't get over. Flamethrowers. Why was an Antarctic research station equipped with several flamethrowers? I'm pretty sure that in the Kurt version he jerryrigged one up.
I auto-hate gore. it's worse than michael bay. not because gore is bad in itself, but that suspense and thriller and plot developments of so many different movies are turning into just gore. its like the south park joke where michael bay thinks a plot development is a helicopter going swah swah swah swah, people like to think that plot developments in horrors and even scifis are when something gross and crazy happens
ya, I agree. Look at The Shinning. Very little gore, yet one of the greatest horror movies.
That was my whole fucking point! If you don't like them why do you watch and critique them.
I don't like romantic comedies or historic costume films in space. As a result I have never watched Bridgit Jones Diary or Star Wars, and I will continue to spare the world from my opinion of them.
BTW Prometheus and Iron Sky coming pretty soon. This year is going to be epic! Finally a proper Ridley Scott movie again AND a proper nazi alien movie!
spoiler:
If you've seen the first movie, and you know that it's a prequel, you know exactly how the movie ends, who survives and what the last shot is.
Wuf auto-hates gore yet enjoyed the newest Rambo.
son rambo was sick. cinematography of kill scenes among the best
I'LL CLAIM WHATEVER I PLEASE
WTF Rambo didnt have gore
It had many reinterpretations of the human body.
************* RAMBO SPOILERS ******************
He ripped a mother fucker's esophagus out of his throat. C'MON!
************************************************** ***
RAMBO!
I think Rambo would have been a better series if they were sequels to the Rocky series. Like he just dropped the gloves and said, fuck it, guns work better and these Southeast Asians are bad ppls, better do somethin about it.
Not much of a spoiler, the info was pretty much over the internet way before movie came out.
Also, bout them throwers, I'm also pretty sure that black guy in a movie had a Luger, so we can safely assume that people on that station collect some Nazi memorabilia, hence the flamers, etc.
I thought Ides of March was incredible. I watched it last night, and I woke up this morning thinking about it.
Melancholia
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised with Ides of March. IMDB underrates it, my guess for why is that it parallels the Obama campaign in some ways, and people don't like the implications it makes
It is a one of a kind movie though. You don't really find campaign/politics movies like this. Only good one I can think of is the docu Street Fight about the Newark mayor Cory Booker
The Fast & the Furious 6 (2013)
Directed by
Justin Lin
Cast
Jason Statham ... (rumored)
Dwayne Johnson ... Luke Hobbs
Vin Diesel ... Dominic Toretto
Michelle Rodriguez ... Letty (rumored)
Paul Walker ... Brian O'Conner (rumored)
Jordana Brewster ... Mia Toretto
Tyrese Gibson ... Roman Pearce (rumored)
Now, where the fuck is Han?
wow, FF series is turning into The Expendables...
watched children of men
i enjoyed it - set in dystopian england.
Children of Men had some of the best steadicam
Watched the latest Prometheus trailer, and now have no desire to see it. Retard advertisers just gave away the plot, the climax, and the resolution
Oh I'm still gonna see it (I tend to exaggerate), but I never pass up an opportunity to hate on the morons in Hollywood.
The trailer gives away several plot points that may or may not be among the most important. One way of putting it is that the trailer creates its own narrative then provides the climax and partial resolution for that narrative. As to how close to the actual movie it is, I don't know. But either way, it's stupid
This.
Also, Iron Sky: Watch the Official Theatrical Trailer!
I get to watch Avengers tonight. Hooray!
They have automated ticket booths now! You can do it in secret!
Get twice the snacks to not look weird at the concession stand!
lol who goes to theaters anymore? i hate production companies so much i wouldn't even take olivia munn's busty sister to a show
mmmm *drool* imaginary women...
...where were we? Oh, yes, movie theaters. Watching a movie on the big screen fucking owns. Well, for some movies it doesn't much matter, but for something like The Avengers, or Prometheus, it would be a shame to miss your chance to see it on the big screen. Also, the fact that you have to wait months to see it on DVD(*ahem*rips*ahem*) makes the theater even more attractive.
I would never miss seeing a real summer blockbuster on the big screen. I enjoy the experience. Quit beig such a hippie Wuf.
The prometheus trailer has inspired me to watch the alien trilogy again. Watched the others as a kid so lookin forward to it now.
Avengers looks awful but reviews seem ok and my low expectations will help.
Took a look at melancholia, that Shit just looks depressing as hell.
Looking forward to Batman, but the lack of heath ledger just makes me sad. No new Batman movie Wii be able to compare.

Avengers was good. Obviously stay and watch the movie until after its credits.
oh shit, maybe I'm an idiot, but I had no clue that this was an Alien prequel. I mean, I knew it was RS, and obviously the world looks very similar, but I just chalked that up to being his style.
I'm even more excited for this now.
even more excited...Quote:
During production, Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof kept the use of computer-generated imagery as low as possible, using CGI mainly in space scenes; Scott recalled advice VFXpert Douglas Trumbull gave him on the set of Blade Runner: "If you can do it live, do it live", and also claimed that practical VFX was more cost-effective than digital VFX.
I think the word is that it's not so much a prequel as it's in the same universe and before Alien.
Fans talk a lot about Space Jockey. Not sure what that is, but it was something from Alien, and perhaps the lore has to do with Space Jockey being a different race that discovered the aliens first or something. Prometheus might be about that
Edit: Contains minor spoiler
Prometheus Trailer #2 - IGN Rewind Theater Video - IGN
This convinced me it was a prequal of sorts. Maybe not a direct prequal but certainly set in the same world and prior to Alien.
ya, from the IMDB page, it says that orginally it was mean to be a direct prequel, then during casting they decided to make it an original piece, and then changed their mind one last time-- it's an "indirect prequel" so like wuf and rong said, it's in the same universe and prior to Alien, but not directly related to it, and there won't xenomorphs.
The Avengers was a really good, funny movie. Hulk was phenomenal even with the different actor, more of the same great things from Ironman, Captain America even felt pretty good in this one compared to his movie. Overall a great film
The Raid: Redemption (2011) - IMDb
Best movie I've seen all year.
Hit & Run is awesome fun. Don't read reviews, don't see trailers, just walk into the theater and watch it.
I just finished A Prophet (2009) - IMDb. I highly recommend this.
Other films I have seen lately:
Four Hitchcock films: Vertigo, Rear Window, North by Northwest, and Rope. Of course, I liked Rope the best. Wufwugy was right once again (http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...800-post4.html)
The Cabin in the Woods was amazing. Watch this now if you haven't seen it. Popcorn mandatory.
Glad you liked Rope holmes. As long as humankind exists, so will Rope being one of the greatest movies ever made
I Saw the Devil (2010) - IMDb
Just saw this south korean thriller yesterday. It's a profound and sinister story about revenge. At times very hard to watch because of its brutality.
A little too long at 141 min but def worth a watch even if you're not a fan of korean movies. Pretty safe to say you won't get bored, but don't watch if you're sensitive to evil shit.
It's pretty common in korean movies that things are done for maximum drama without bothering to make everything super believable so don't get stuck on that.
Anyone else seen it?
My students have actually recommended it. With you seconding it, I may just watch it.
End of Watch is pretty fucking brutal, but I enjoyed it. Would recommend.
Benny's commentary is the most explosive, action-packed thriller of the year
I liked this film Safety Not Guaranteed - Rotten Tomatoes
Lawless is a good film also here comes the boom, Taken and old school.
Meh, wasn't a big fan of Safety Not Guaranteed. It was OK. Nothing great.
The Intouchables (2011) - IMDb - French film based on a true story. It's not perfect, but I really enjoyed it
I just saw True Romance (1993) - IMDb for the first time recently. The scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper was amazing. Very solid movie.
Good script but I hate Tony Scott and Christian Slater.
I just watched the latest Batman. Didn't rreally like it. It was watchable though.
On a side note I used to know Tom Hardy as teenagers. He was a complete dickhead. Used to talk like he was rudeboy from Brixton when he was a private school boy from East Sheen. Wished I'd stayed friends with him now...
Good stuff. There is sanity in the world...
Looper parallels Terminator in so many ways yet isn't nearly as good. Does Hollywood even make good movies anymore? Seriously, what's the last actual good one that came out of there? Do The Prestige and Winter's Bone count?
Django I'm guessing? Yes I will be watching that. Basterds still remains the greatest movie of all time....
But Tarantino doesn't count; he's the least Hollywood thing there ever was.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy that he has the clout that he does. I mean, Nolan is a boss, but even he had to make three super hero movies to get Inception greenlit. Tarantino just does his thing, and every time he's ready to do it again, he has Keitel's and the Weinsteins' blank checks to do it.
