    Default Biggest downswing ever...

What is your biggest swing ever???

I am currently enjoying a 29 buy in downswing!?!?!?!?

    19 at 200 and 10 at 100(dropped down) over 30k hands.

I have 1 winning day(2 buy ins) in the last 7.

It started out with me not playing my A game, and is currently running some mean variance and beats.

Does anyone around here have me beat??

    $ 1200BR
    -$400 $50NL = 8
    -$600 $25NL = 24

    for 32 BI's,

Dep. my last $200 on Full tilt. The rest is in my blog.
Not the sheer amount of your $$$ lost but pretty brutal none the less.
  3. #3
Yeah mine is 20 buy ins at 100NL.
    Check out the new blog!!!

15 buyins @ 200nl and 5 @ 100nl [dropped down after blowing though $3k @ 200nl] all over 40kish hands. Variance sucks and this made me realize that, but I can definitely not attribute all of this to variance and think that most of our huge downswings at these stakes have a lot to do with our play.

22 buyins when I first started playing nl100 in under 10k hands (buying in slightly short to bonus whore).

    hang in there Jager.
when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?

That's rough man, but from what I read here you're a good player so I'm sure you'll get over it..

    @Trainer_jymS: isn't that 8+24=32 buyins?
  8. #8
Your right, I suck at math. I fixed it. I just know how much I gave myself to play the $50NL and then how far I fell at $25NL. I never actaully added up the buy ins.

Wow, i really sucked it up then, that's alot of buy ins.

13 is my most, but I've managed 12+buyin downswings 4 times.
  10. #10
wow I guess I can't complain about my 35K breakeven stretch now.

biggest downswing in between 17 - 20 buyins
  11. #11
BTW in every major downswing of mine including this breakeven stretch I have Tilted and potcomitted myself and in general not been playing my a game.

    Downswinging holla!
    25 between 200-600nl. Probably 8-9 were 200nl.

Currently on like 14 buyin downswing at 200nl.

My worst is 7. Not quite the numbers everyone else is showing but I only play about 3 tables at a time.

When I hit 5 down I seriously re-evaluate my game. I also camp for a while a FR tables to get th money and my confidence back. I also play tighter than a morman girl in high school. Some say keep your aggressive game, but to play your aggressive game you need your head to be on straight so you can read hands properly. Going back to basics and playing a low varience game helps he regain my composure.

When does a downswing turn into "I cannot beat this game?"

that s a tough question to answer

I have spoken to high stakes players who are winners over 200k hands + sample sizes who have had 25+ buyin downswings

but those are very aggressive games typically. So at nl200 and lower, unless you're getting sucked out on left and right, after 15 buyins or so, my guess is you have some things to look at with your game.

10 buy-ins at 50NL I think. It hurt bad back then, I don't think i could hand ones as big as you guys are describing.

    you're not that good, though.

p.s. I've had a few 10+ downswings in my lifetime. Most of those felt like bad play, though. This was also when the games were better (although they're still damn good, just not as good)....so maybe that's why I never had a really huge swing.

I don't get it, so you lost 29 buy-ins in one day?

I shouldn't say my sixmax swings since my edge is tiny there at best, but probably something like 10-12 buyins. Most of my heartbreak in 6 max lies in inhuman stretches of breakeven.

I consider myself to be a pretty decent winner at full ring, and this month i've had a 11 buyin downswing, followed by a recovery, immediately followed by an 11.5 buyin downswing.
  22. #22
so far (~200k hands), my biggest is about -13 buys at 50nl last july.
I think game/seat selection (having only like 10k hands at 200nl and none at 400nl+ is obv a big factor though), fewer tables, and basically a need to improve and win to pay some bills are the main reasons I haven't had a 20+ swing yet.

Quoted for truth, repeated for emphasis, and I would be very surprised indeed if anyone who has posted on this thread doesn't empathise with this.

Mine was ~15 buy-ins. My biggest downswing usually begin at the end of my biggest upswings. I get overconfident and spewy, and I'm already well into my downswing before I realize that my game has deteriorated.

FWIW I have done my bit to get Jager out of his downswing.

I've had 15 buys at 400NL, followed by 10 at 200NL followed by 10 at 100NL for a total of $9000 in one week.

Im like Galapogos... my worst is 9 buy-ins downswing. But when I go on thees downswings, I usually take some kind of break, and think about what is going wrong with my game. Very rarely are my big downswings simply products of bad beats, and there is often something else happening that I should be able to control.
  31. #31
I lost 17 buy-ins in one day last week playing $100NL.

Good post buy Jo on being a hot sucker (i couldn't figure out how to quote stuff).
    Hello everyone.
  32. #32
My worst downswing was ~15 buyins @ $100nl over a 3 week timespan a few months ago. Never had anything close to that before...worst was probably 6 or 7 previous to that.

i think alot of people label there downswings as just varience or bad luck, when 90% of the time it is due to bad play

I disagree, since I've been personally set-over-setted 7 times once over 600 hands and have seen a good friend lose what seemed to be 70-80% of his 75/25 races (think top and mid pair vs TPGK) over the span of a few weeks and about 8k hands.

Not much you can do about that shit and it hurts your BR.

Sometimes there's just nothing you can do when the cards keep screwing you over. Man the last few days after moving up I've been getting schooled by all the 20NL maniacs. Started off tangling with a 80/40 guy.. lost AK vs AK allin preflop etc. People calling with anything and keep hitting on me.
Just now I was down close to 4 buyins over 2k hands, and actually afraid to enter a hand because nothing ever held up. Then in the span of 5 minutes, made 5 buyins so now I'm up one lol. But in the same sense it could've kept going bad.. if that happens to you, nothing you can do really..

(yeah it's peanuts-stakes but I'm trying to build a BR.. and I'm on sorta tilt atm playing super aggressive but it seems to be working cuz people are paying me off like crazy)

A very close friend has just swung down -24 buyins between nl200 and nl50.

Completely insane. Out of 25 ish, 1 stack was due to tilt.

Oy yeah, 5.4k hands total, 1 day of playing ***vomit***...

    nah that's the sick thing.

He was doing an underrolled experiment (the aba project from his "well" thread on 2p2) and was sitting with 21 buyins for 200.

-lose 7 buyins at nl200 so drop down to nl100 around 2.8k

-lose 9 buyins at nl100 so drop down to nl50

-lose 7 buyins ***AT NL50*** and consider suicide...

Just sick. I finished re-reviewing all the hand histories and it's semi-disturbing ; maybe 2 or 3 hands he overplayed but it was just shit outside of his control (rivers counterfeiting his 2 pair hands AI on turn, ppl drawing out constantly when money is in on flop etc.).

And FWIW this player is a 2p2 er, winning player over 650k hands lol between nl25 and nl400!

    Insane.

im trully hating poker right now.
Most are prob aware i got a shity job recently that means i cant play, which has lead to me looking for good games to play in rather than getting large number in.

    However, since getting a job:

    11.5k @100nl
    -2.26bbs/100

    10.4k@200nl
    -5.56bbs/100 (WTF!)

    8k@400nl
    +0.34bbs/100

    2.3k@1000nl
    -2.24bbs/100

I think the poker gods are telling me something...

On a related note, does anybody have some stats on what you winrate is when you downswing?
When runing good im usually 10bbs+ for a lifetime of about 7-9bbs/100 but my downswings are 3-5bbs/100.
    ANyone got data?
  44. #44
lol you do 7-9/ptbb pr 100 and you are complaining. Sorry but you are killing games have some guts to deal with variance aswell
  45. #45
At around 20 buy-ins you can't just say downswing. Certainly not after 30.

What's been up with your game selection?

Given the way these games are playing, I'm wondering if a lot of people are better off playing 50deep and leaving the table 100deep unless there is a super-fish.

this is probably true. Its just AA/KK/QQ getting sucked out on the river after betting every street really sucks.
AA is still invincible i guess depsite running pretty bad but KK is barely a winner WTF!

As your edge gets smaller and the game gets more aggressive you'll swing more.

being non-american allows me to stay away from these games at the moment, although even bodog 5/10nl is going to take me some time to adjust too as of yet. My high stakes poker experience is still less than 200k hands old.

My biggest is about a 40k downswing spread between 3/6 5/10 10/20 and 25/50. So not that big.

I think my biggest is around 8 maybe. Def under 10. Plus I had bonuses to cover some of the losses.

btw here is a read on variance if anyone is interested
