Default Buying in short at a higher level...

    Yay or nay?

I did this last night at 50NL just for a laugh / change of pace.

I can see pro's and con's but wondered what the consensus was, so I'd welcome opinion from anyone.

i'm sure you've read Fnord's thread on halfstacking:

My experience is that shortstacking at higher buyins is OK if you know how to play a short stack. More often than not, when I try shortstacking, I do badly because in the heat of the moment, I ocasionally forget I don't have a full buyin and play my normal full stack game.

Thanks, it's a great post by Fnord, I'm also interested in knowing what people think of using buying in short as a method of taking shots at a higher level - kind of feeling it out without going busto

My bankroll is the amount of money I would spend or lose before I got a job. It is calculated by adding my net worth to whatever I can borrow.

If you're talking about buying in for the minimum, don't. It won't teach you how to play since all you're doing is getting good hands all-in preflop. Also, it's insanely high variance. You're better off just improving your game and learning how to play at those levels.

I play 100NL and occasionally buy in for $100 at 200NL. Gives me a sense of what the next level up is like without risking too much. Overall, haven't done well with this approach but clearly way too few hands. Maybe though I'd be better off staying at 100NL and building my roll so that I can play my normal full stack game when I do move up. So I think maybe it's ok to have a looksee but no point in doing it regularly until you're ready to move up for good.
