There's nothing wrong with chasing a gutshot straight draw on the flop if he make up for the bad odds later + has a chance to bluff you if his cold call slows you down (maybe you're holding pocket 9s). I just think it was stupid of him to draw to the ignorant end of a gutshot - too bad you didn't have AJ.
2 pair is a hand you want to be betting with and not calling with. There are a lot of cards that connect to this flop and a lower 2 pair is a possibility, but he wouldn't be pushing in against a strong checkraise with a lower 2 pair unless he's crazy.
