How do you play heads up with semi deepstacks?

I did not use my normal aggressive line against this guy. If he decided to push I did not want to be put to a hard decision. This guy is capable of setting traps, him limping/flat calling with AA preflop would not suprise me. Basically what I want to know, is it common to use extreme caution when heads up against a deep stack. Or do you play the same? I'm usually looking to keep the pot size down unless I have the nuts of course. But hands like TPTK lose value to me. Discuss.
