    Default Tough HU session

I feel I do pretty well HU usually but this was the most aggressive opp I've ever encountered in my admittedly short poker career. My plan was to only raise with decent hands as I found him hard to play post flop, to make stands with middle or low pairs, to sometimes call down if I feel I'm probably ahead even with a high card, and to try and trap him with a big hand. It nearly worked I was a bit unlucky to lose. But if anyone who fancies themselves a demon HU player wants to offer some advice I'd appreciate it - sorry it's a bit long.

I would normally play more aggressively but I was battered back by him Should I have been raising and C-betting more? It seemed to have a low success rate against him.
  2. #2
Had a look at a few hands. Hand # 79

Why did you fold with the top pair. Heads up that is really strong and its obvious he was betting into at every opportunity. You should have made it much more preflop with the Ace and bet bigger when you hit it.

The way i would get round this is to raise far more often pre flop. The more flops you see against someone that aggressive post flop the more you lose. He obviously had the discipline to fold when you pushed over and he was bluffing. I would loosen my ranges pre flop and raise more. Say 900 to go. 600 wasn't working. If he is calling all the time. Push some pre-flop.

Im no demon, but my dad plays just like that guy and thats how i take my game to him.
  3. #3
    Overall comments:
    - I think you need to be much more aggressive preflop, you are completing the SB too often. Depending on how aggressive opp is, I’m raising 50-60% of hands and folding the bottom 20%. Aggression wins HU, keep the pressure on your opponent.
    - I think you are check/calling postflop too often, particularly on missed flops. Sure, opps may be betting with air but you need a stronger hand to call rather than bet. Alternatively, if you think opp is betting with air, RAISE!

    69. 84o – With no pair or draw and OOP I wouldn’t lead here. Just check/fold.

    70. 86o – I would actually raise it preflop to 500. See how he reacts to being raised. As played, fold the flop, you don’t have odds to call to try to hit your gutshot.

    71. K4s – Sorry to be harsh but this was ugly. Calling the minraise preflop is fine but on the flop I would just check/call with odds with your nut flush draw. Same for the turn, opp raised preflop so it is likely that he is ahead at this point, your pair of 4s is no good, why lead? On the river, you definitely have to check/fold, he has you beat and he isn’t going to fold - he needs to call 400 to see a pot of 2700, even if all he has is a pair of 7s he’s calling this.

    73. Q2s – again I think calling the minraise is fine.

    74. Q3o – I would raise it up rather than limping. Q3o is ahead of the average hand, and I’m raising 60% of hands HU unless opp is very aggressive (ie. he pushes over my preflop raises). This would set you up for a c-bet on the flop.

    75. KQo – preflop raise is good. On the flop, I would make it 700-800 rather than 1000 to go into the 1250, if opp pushes over it saves you 200-300 chips.

    76. 74o – ballsy play, I think this was too risky though. I would actually have just folded this preflop and folded to the minraise. 74o sucks (despite what Ripptyde might say). I would also have folded the flop or alternatively raised (but probably folded). I would have folded the turn too – I think opp had the better hand here and you folded him off it. At a higher buy-in I might like this better but many $5.50 opps will call this with a hand that beats you and you’re out.

    78. 84o – raise or fold preflop. Flop bet was nice.

    79. A3o – I think flat calling the minraise is fine. On the flop, this was bad. Top pair any kicker is like flopping trips on a full table, I would have either led for about 600 and called any push or alternatively check-raised all-in. Whilst it’s possible that he had an A with a better kicker, I think he pushed you off the best hand here.

    80. JTs – preflop raise is good. C-bet the flop, 700-800 to go. If he calls, then shut down unless you hit. I think you might have been able to push him off middle pair here.

    81. KTo – I think checking preflop is fine, I don’t like playing hands like KTo OOP. Again, I would have folded the flop – I doubt that he has the ace but even if he has middle or bottom pair you are drawing to 6 outs. As played, the river check-raise was nice!

    82. 75o – another one you could fold preflop if you wanted, or raise it up. I prefer just folding this one. Again, fold the flop

    83. T9s – I think I prefer to just check the BB here and play a flop. I don’t hate the raise though. Good semi-bluff with the OESD on the flop.

    85. KQo – lead the flop for about 700-800. As played, I don’t like the way you check/called on the flop and river. You were very lucky to have the best hand – I would expect to see 3x, 6x or Ax here.

    87. Q4s – good play, I like this.

    88. A6o – This was pretty bad. Why didn’t you bet the flop, were you trying to check-raise? As played, raise his silly minbet on the turn! You let yourself get runner runnered here.

    90. T6s – raise preflop and bet the flop. $5.50 players expect you to check your flopped trips so by betting you actually disguise the strength of your hand. On the turn, I think your play is fine, but this is one spot where you could just flat call to try to get a large river bluff out of opp, the chance of opp being on the flush draw is quite low I think.

    92. 93o – raise preflop, you need to put pressure on your opp since his stack is down to 11x BB. As played, I would fold the flop. From his betting patterns, it looks like opp bets small with weak hands and big with strong hands so I think he has you beat.

    94. A7o – I would have called the push. Any A is a strong hand HU, you may well have been ahead. Whilst it’s quite possible that he had a pocket pair 77+ or A8+, you have to include A2-A6, pocket pairs 22-66 and hands like KQ/KJ in his range. There is 6720 in the pot and you need to call 4670 so you’re getting 1.44 to 1 on the call so provided you’re at least 41% to win you are getting the right price to call:
    Code:
            	equity (%) win (%)	tie (%)
    Hand  1:	41.9166 %  	34.56% 	07.35%      { A7o }

    96. TT – I would not limp/re-raise here. Overcards come on the flop the majority of the time when you have TT, I would not give opp the chance to see a free flop. I would make a standard raise. I can’t believe that he called your preflop push with Q9o, this leads me to believe his raising range in hand 94 could have been wide than you think. You were unlucky to lose the 70/30.

Pretty much agreeing with taipan here

You really need to be raising if you have the button pre-flop, sometimes with utter trash just so your opponent has to make some decisions and doesn't realise that you're weak at any time.

Don't min raise though, and keep all your raises the same, that shouldn't give him any clues and will allow you to trap when you catch a monster and he gets sick of getting raised almost everytime.

I had to learn that hu you bets have to be harder. 1/2 pot bet looks weak and is normally an invitation to be reraised. I struggled until i learnt this and generally 3/4 is my normal min bet.

Top pair is gold dust hu.

I think i noticed that each time you hit a strong hand you bet a lot harder and pushed him off the hand straight away.

Good fold when he showed the straight - I might have called there.

Tiapan #81 After reading harrington I would raise 600-800 to push him off there and then because you are out of position for the rest of the hand. would you do this? Or are u setting urself up for a big pot oop..

I think this is very read dependent as to how opp reacts to being raised when he completes the SB. If he's liable to fold I can find a raise. If he will mostly call the raise then I'd rather just check and see a flop and only get froggy if I hit a K, T or better.

I guess I don't hate raising with KTo from the BB but I tend to have a pathological aversion to playing big pots OOP when I don't have a strong hand preflop.
