I think he should have reraised all in on the flop to push the others out. You don't want a family pot with a high pocket. It may be +EV to smooth call, but it's better +EV to raise all in and not get greedy.
As for the call with 33, it was bad, but it wasn't totally horrible. He was last act, there was $33 dollars in the pot already, and the original preflop raiser had a high stack to pay the person holding 33 who had a pretty high stack himself. He was thinking the implied odds were there, though he was stretching the concept a bit. This is exactly the reason you isolate your KK however. Smart players take advantage of odds, and they get better and better with each passing smooth caller.
