Really hate to fold after putting so much money in, but most likely he has a set, don't you think? I thought I had to raise this much not to give him good odds for a flush draw. Anything I should have done differently?

This is one of those highly read-dependent situations.
If the guy's a donk he has 78, 89, 45, 77, 66, 55, 33, 99, A8, etc - and he thinks you're bluffing (had someone do this to me with 89 the other day but had notes on him so I could call in that situation).

If he's not, he's got a set. He might also be a donk and have 24.

Any reads/notes on the guy?

This was just after I sat down at the table so I didn't have any reads on him at all. Usually when I think someone is playing like that, sitting with the hands you mentioned, I'm wrong and lose cash on it. Today I lost a whole buyin tn someone sitting with a set of fours when I had two pair AA, KK. Hate when people call my 6BB raise with 44 and stuff like that

He was in the SB.I think if he had a set he would check to the raiser instead of betting into you. You cant always give people on .25 too much credit.

I'd say you're ahead here enough of the time to justify a call. It's only another 12$ to call and the pot is around $30. His possible holdings include a lot more hands than sets here. Why lead out a pot sized bet on a raggy board with a set? Can he read you for an over pair or is that your standard pre flop raise? Unless he is a good player with a strong read on you for an over pair that he knows you will pay off, this is a little too aggressive for a set from early position IMO.
