    Default Another standard hand

    GAMB00LPoker&SportBook.com

Late night game. Half the table is asleep, couple soft spots and Fnord wants to GAMB00L!

I have $103 from stealing my newbie blind.

Set farmer limps from EP, folded to CO who limps, SB folds, I check with K J

Alright notes on the CO. He's a regular on this site. Has over $200 right now. Fairly active player (over ~25% VP$IP). Limps a lot pre-flop and under-bets post-flop. Overall kind of passive. We have a little history, last time we played I told him how much fun I had breaking him. He may or may not remember this.

Alright, 3 to the frop, $3 or so in the pot.
    J 6 4

I lead for $3, EP fold, CO calls.

$9 in the pot, heads up the turn
    J
    I bet $6, CO raises to $12, I call

$33 in the pot, heads up to the river
    8
    I check...

    Standard?

Same site, same opponent, different table. I have about $100, he has $400.

Table was running a little wild, but is cooling down as the main action player is back down to $100.

    Opponent limps UTG+1
    CO calls
I raise to $4 on the button with K Q
SB calls, BB folds, everyone else calls.

4 to the flop, $17 in the pot.
    5 7 K
Checked, to me and I bet $12, BB folds, EP thinks...... calls, CO folds

Heads-up to the turn $41 in the pot
    5
    Check, I bet $20, call

Heads-up to the river, $81 in the pot
    T
    Checked through

On hand one, are check-rasing a small bet and calling a large bet? I think he may have QJ or JT.

Hand 2, not much you can do if he just keeps calling without a draw very possible. I guess he has a K, probably not AK.

First hand I bet river against this guy. Looks like a busted draw or a worse J. Only AJ or a set has you in trouble. I guess you have to ask whether or not you are willing to play for stacks on the river. If you bet, and he moves over the top, I think I could fold, maybe. If you check and he moves in on river, do you intend to call?

I bet 15 on river in hand 1. Majority of time he will make crying call with medium PP, or destack him with worse J or he folds his busted draw. The check raise on turn was weak and smells like a decent hand like medium pair looking for information or a semi-bluff by the draw. Only a small percentage of the time is that a huge hand building a pot heads up on that board.

Hand 2 pot is big enough and he's calling you down. No need to push there as only hand that calls will have you smoked 9 times out of 10.

If your opponent in the first hand is passive why are you checking the river? I think a value bet is in order against a passive, a tricky check against an aggro who is going to try and rep the jack. Or do you think your trips with K kicker is no good?

KQ hand i dont' see any other way to play it. Missed flush or a worse K i guess.

What merit does a stop'n'go river bet have against the range JX/XY ? I can only think of one...

If this particular opponent raises the river, how often are we good? IF we wanted to play for stacks, how is this sort of line better than 3-betting the turn? Consider that this is an unraised pot.

There is such a large range of hands he could play the hand that way. The river check just opens the door for him to try to bet you off the hand. If you bet out...
If he has a monster he moves over top and you have a chance to lay it down.
If he has busted draw he folds.
If he has a worse J he makes a crying call and you win more $$$.
If he has an overpair or a medium pair you may get a crying call or a fold.
Only thing that has you in trouble is AJ or the boat with the low PP's

His play on the turn was weird with the min raise. It says "I have a monster FH and I can only hope you improve on the river" which is the worst case or he is making a bad play on a weak semi-bluff. Telling the difference is the trick, when you figure that out let me know?

So I bet because I think my hand is good and don't want to surrender control of the hand to opponent and let him steal the pot from me.

Looks standard to me. In the first hand you took a somewhat passive line so there's no reason for villian to give you credit for a jack. How big of a bet do you call on the end?

2nd hand I play exactly the same.

Well then yeah if your check on the river was done in order to induce a big bet from him on a worse J, busted flush bluff or any other worse hand, AND you intend to call or come over the top then YES it is standard.

BUT, I still prefer to be the bettor on the river because you are more in control of the action. What do you do when he bets $5 into that pot?

He either gets away cheap with a baby defensive bet OR worst case he is setting you up and he really does have a monster and is praying you will take the bait.
