Hi I just have a question to all you high stakes NL players how many of you play NL for a living or supplement your income nicely playing just NL I know alot of people play limit this way but I wasnt sure about NL and also do u keep 1000BB or 20 buyins ive heard both these figures and was curious.

i don't play high stakes but from what i've heard from those who do 30-40 buyins are necessary to be safe. the games are harder, swings are bigger, and being a professional requires a bigger bankroll.

Yeah for when i become a real pro i will have atleast 100 buyins for the stakes i'm playing at. Currently i only NEED 30 buyins but i've gotten to the point that its not so much about how many buyins i've got, its about what stakes i'm comfortable playing at and what variance i can deal with.

I've been playing high-stakes NL for a living for a few months now, currently I have about 40 buyins spread across Party, UB, Pacific and Inter. You better be pretty confident about your game if you're playing with 20 buyins or less, as the swings are huge and it is not uncommon to lose 10 consecutive buyins. (not that that's ever happened to me :P)

No you obviously don't need that much to just play the game, but there is a difference between playing the game, and having your sole income rely on that game. I wouldn't personally want to lose 8 buyins in a day have to deal with the fact that i lost 80% of my roll (by your guidelines) in one day. With 100 buyins i can just say "hmmm i lost a pretty insignificant amount of my roll, whatever" and then go to bed and play great poker the next day without any worries of going bust or having my income affected.

Just to add- the higher the stakes you're playing, the higher the variance, since people play trickier and more aggressively. Consequently you want more buy-ins if you're playing higher stakes. Also at the lowest stakes the variance is going to be high, due to people playing poorly, so you want more buy-ins compared to middle stakes.
Here's my completely arbitrary guideline for how big a bankroll you need to grind comfortably at a certain stake.

1/2 8,000 (40 buyins)
2/4 14,000 (35 buyins)
3/6 21,000 (35 buyins)
5/10 40,000 (40 buyins)
10/20 100,000 (50 buyins)
25/50 250,000 (50 buyins)
50/100 500,000 (50 buyins)
