Default Flopped straight with a flush draw

I flop the nut straight and bet hard, but 3 to a flush falls on the turn. Should I have bet the turn? With my bet on the flop it's very unlikely to be a flush draw.

If that was your read, then why not bet for value on the turn?

I was afraid of a git who would draw with terrible odds, or a possible good pair with flush draw.

Also, I just wanted to keep the pot small because my straight was now pretty vulnerable.

My main worry with checking the turn is a set or two pair sensing my weakness and betting. That would have left me with a difficult decision.

that's the point (one of them) of checking the turn

you want him to bet into you, and generally you call.
