This is too thin on the river, your two pair is very very weak and could've gotten beaten easily. The proper play is either to check behind or bet like half the pot here on the river. Also, raise the flop.

I can see the merits for shorter stacked play (<= 100bbs) but for deeper stacks doesn't it make more sense to let him commit more of his stack before I raise?

Comparatively to LHE, the reverse implied odds for NL with a mediocre hands are pretty huge, because they could mean the difference between stacking or getting stacked. Without the pure nuts (or set like hand) you want to get that value in on the flop or take it down, as, it is very easy for you to not win a lot of money by slowplaying this hand. Also, you are going to want to be able to build the pot with your monster hands so you can force your opponent to be pot commited.

In LHE, you wanted to wait until the turn because the bets are bigger and if you do get sucked on it, chances are you're only going to lose like 1 BB more had you not slowplayed.

besides the scaredcard thing, you want to be building pots with big hands so its easier to get all the villian's chips without overbetting (and possibly scaring off KQ in a later street).
