Default Looking for some good movies.

So I've been watching a lot of movies lately, and been really into the surreal types. Stuff like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and even strange comedies such as Being John Malkovich. Also great movies with a message like American History X.. one of the best.

Just wondering if anyone knows of anything in this type of genre that I should watch... or maybe just list some good ones. Readygo.

    Surreal-ish movies...
Requiem for a Dream is excellent.
Pi, by same director, is pretty decent.

.. and (I don't mean to flame), but Boondock Saints is one of the most contrived and ridiculous movies ever. It's entertaining for 1-2 viewings, but anyone thinking it's a "great movie" has got to be kidding.
So you click their picture and then you get their money?

You'd love Almodovar I think - "Matador" and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" are two of my favourites. "You, Me and Everyone We Know" is a good one if you like quirkily indie cinema - not everyone does

Oh and "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Lost in Translation" in the small chance you haven't seen them. Oh, and "Dirty Pretty Things".

I agree boondock saints is good but way overrated. Pulp fiction on the other hand is said to be overrated by some, yet I think it is one of the greats and dont see what anyone could possibly have against it.

The only "woah thats trippy dude!" type of movie that I really like is The Machinist.

    Other good shit

    Ong Bak

    Hero

    Snatch

    Kill Bill 1/2

Running Scared (man.. I over looked this one in theatres even when my brother wouldnt stop talking about it, I hate paul walker, Im into cars and I hate the fast and the furious because it makes car culture a joke. Paul walker I thought was the biggest homo ever. But hes redeemed himself.)

Gangs of New York (similar as above with dicaprio, however he seems to be evolving out of his pretty boy roots. His accent sucks in the movie, but it was bearable)

Graveyard of the Fireflies (its japanimation or anime or whatever, but its not an action movie. Over in japan animation is taken a lot more seriously then it is in the US. Really great movie, if youre an anime fan or not.)

Akira / Ghost in a Shell / Ninja Scroll (if you are an anime fan or are curious, these are def the ones to get started with.)

Belly (pretty much scarface, but new york in the late 90's and black gangstas instead of cuban gangstas.)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Fire extinguisher scene is beyond amazing, def ranks in top 10 scenes of all time for me.)

I could go on, but youve got plenty to watch already, have fun.

^^^^^ This guy has an excellent taste in movies.

The only correction I'd make is "all kubrick films, especially Dr. Strangelove". Clockwork Orange is good too though.

My favourites in this category: requiem for a dream, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind(!!), blueberry, Lost in Translation (in a way, + Scarlett ), clockwork orange, dr. strangelove (the best comedy, ever).

kind of a boring list but best of the best for you!
  20. #20
watch I <3 huckabees. it was a very good comedy. very out there.

and the anything kubrick clearly has to NOT include The Shining, which was a horrible version of a great book. very bad.

boondock saints was a horribly acted farce of a movie. the only redeeming quality was that it had Billy Connolly, even though it had him playing an Irish hitman. willem dafoe was horrid. i was under the impression that he could act before i saw this movie. but he still wasnt quite as bad as everyone else.

    the shining was good

its not a version of a book, its an ADAPTATION of a book. Part of the fun of adapting a book is changing things around to make it better for movies. In A Clockwork Orange the book, Alex becomes reformed at the end, and actually settles down and has a family. Kubrick knew that this would completely ruin the film, so he left it out.

Prove of this lies in the fact that the miniseries version of The Shining, which was directly pulled from the book, sucked total ass.
  22. #22
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind(!!)
  23. #23
the shining (the book) was about a mans struggle with alcoholism. the movie virtually completely removed this aspect. and dont get me started about the kid talking with his finger, what the hell was that.

as for a clockwork orange, i have not seen that movie, but i doubt that it could do justice to the book. it might, but it would be hard. the book was great.

now Dr. Strangelove was a brilliant movie. funny, memorable, etc. I just think that his treatment of the shining was shallow and incomplete, and lacked everything that a great movie requires.

Absolutely, Boondock saints and one that wasn't mentioned, 3000 miles to graceland. And Kill bill, even though it was mentioned 100 times already.
  29. #29
noone is arguing that jack wasnt good in the shining. he was. the kid was not. the way the kids' psychic experiences manifested themselves for the movie was horrendous. the entire point of the book was removed. hell, I think the Simpsons did a better version of the shining in their halloween episode than Kubrick did.

It had everything, including a main character dealing with the ravages of alcoholism while being a struggling writer.

plus it had one of the best scenes ever. Homer (in his best Jack voice): "what do you think marge, all i need is a title. I was thinking about calling it no TV and no beer make Homer..something something." Marge: "go crazy?" Homer:"Don't mind if I do. "

ok, someone mentioend 3000 miles to graceland. This movie was not very good, but it was not bad. I cant really explain it well. Its like escape from new york (funny another kurt russel film) Not great, but definatley enjoyable. I like these kind of movies.

****if you havent seen the following movie, move this to the top of your list****

    Seven Samurai

    http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/swo.../7samurai.html

This movie influenced american cinema sooo much. Just like the way hong kong cinema heavily influences american action movies today (you thought the matrix was the originator of bullet time? hah!) Anyways this movie is beyond great, and you must see it.

sometimes when you color outside the lines you get a picaso, often you get crap. By-the-numbers movies can be some of the best for the simple fact that everything can be so highly polished. Also realize that braveheart is probably the first epic that stands up to todays standards. Before braveheart epics where cheezey by todays standards. Its obviously not the first epic, but it is the first 'modern' epic. Calling it bland is like calling the wright brothers plane slow..

'Running Scared' was pretty sick. I'd definitely recommend it.

I recently saw 'Hostel.' Pretty good movie. Lots of hot (naked) chicks, and VERY gruesome.
  52. #52
    Lot of good stuff above.

Here's some I don't think have been mentioned, more on the side of "weiiiird maaaaaan":

Go find yourself The Wizard of Oz (EDIT: NOT Alice in Wonderland, which is trippy too) with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon overdubbed. It's pretty much everywhere online.

    Equilibrium is sci-fi thriller/head trippy..pretty sweet.

The Beatles Yellow Submarine. Whacked OUT.

Of the previous posts of movies, SLC Punk is about the craziest one I've seen!
Save your stories 'cuz they're all the same..

Well for mind bending shit check out David Lynch.

I've seen " Malhulland Drive" three times and still don't get it.

Then I ran into "Lost Highway" a month ago and was really f'ed up.

These will keep you wondering like forever.

"Buffalo 66" is another esoteric flick that has a hot christina Ricci going for it

and... "Dark City" is also a thinker with a young Jennifer Connelly.

And to lighten it up at the end who can forget UNCLE BUCK an Candy classic, my kids have seen it 20 times and always sit down when its on.

Dark city was a cool movie.

I must say, I like Wes Anderson but The Life Aquatic is the dumbest movie I've ever seen.

The hills have eyes is the most disturbing movie I have ever seen in my life. Do not watch with your mom!

A movie I liked which didn't have a cool plot but the idea of the movie was cool is AI by steven spielberg. I think I'm the only person in the world who enjoyed this movie though.

Its Mullholland drive. And its not that hard to figure out.
I wouldn't suggest trying to figure out Lost Highway since its impossible.David Lynch still laughs with all the ppl who think they figured out Lost Highway or still try to understand.

Some good ones that haven't been mentioned yet. These are all movies that will make you think some, but without being super wierd or anything.

Primal Fear with Edward Norton Jr
    Instinct with Anthony Hopkins
The Devils Advocate with Al Pacino and Keanu
The Life of David Gale with Kevin Spacey(you'll probably either love or hate this one)
The Jacket with Adrian Brody(way better than I thought it would be)

And this one won't make you think at all, but I highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't seen it:
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (one of the funniest movies I've seen)

Mulholland Dr, if you like Lynch. Outside of The Straight Story, it's the most tangible Lynch movie, IMO. It makes perfect sense, if you think about it for a while and look for the symbolic clues throughout the movie.

Solaris, if you don't mind a deliberately slow-paced sci-fi drama that makes you think. It's about a relationship and existentialism, not about space ships. (The remake by Soderbergh. Never saw the original.)

A Tale Of Two Sisters, for something a little different. It's a Korean "horror" movie, but it's not so much horror as it is a surreal psychological drama... along the lines of The Sixth Sense, but creepier.

Running Scared, for an all-out, ultra-violent, intense action thriller (and check out the DVD credits by selecting the New Line logo on the main menu).

Closer. Natalie Portman as a stripper!
  62. #62
never ever take movie recommendations seriously from someone who recommends you see either the devil's advocate or the jacket. keanu reeves and his constantly disappearing accent, and the jacket was just stupid. didn't think the life of david gale was anything special either, pretty predictable run of the mill movie. primal fear was pretty good though, even though it had richard gere.

solaris was one of the worst movies i have seen. it was not slowpaced, it didnt move at all. horribly boring and completely pointless. the only redeeming feature of it was the breasts of the female lead. and that barely made up for sitting in a theatre for the entire movie thinking to myself "I had better get laid after sitting through this shit movie."

I agree with so many of these, but wanted to add a couple comments. In particular, David Lynch needs to be re-highlighted here.

YES on Mulholland Dr. It really does make sense, (spoiler follows) you just have to think of the last third of the movie as the "real" part.

Koyaanisqatsi (while high, and with good, loud speakers)

2001: A Space Odyssey (also while high and listening to "Echos" by Pink Floyd during the final act "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite," a far more interesting soundtrack for the last 20 minutes of the film than the original soundtrack.)

I also think Heat is a great film although not in line with the "surreal" theme. As with Kill Bill 1/2 and others mentioned.

Edit: I of course am not advocating the use of illegal substances. Only speaking in theory.

It's actually Wizard of Oz. But that's only cool the first time or so, because it's intended to be completely synchronous. The use of Echoes in 2001 is far less synchronous, yet a better blend of soundtrack and has a longer lasting impression on further viewings/listens.

Spirited Away also. Kind of surreal. As with most Miyazaki...

I thought Devil's advocate was decent. I mean, any movie with the line "touch my nipples, you think they're real?" is pretty cool.

I dunno about The Life Aquatic. I loved the Royal Tenenbaums but I feel like Anderson tried too hard to make it subtle humor and it just came off as a fake movie that only the faux-artsy people boast as good and only because it seems artsy. Damn, say that last line 3 times fast

I'm sure it's been mentioned but anyone said The Usual Suspects, one of the all time greats.
