Default Value Betting river when scare card hits.

You have Tp Tk, 2 pair, set & you have been betting & getting called on flop, turn, opponent could be on a draw & last card completes flush or 4 to a straight.
I generally bet because I don't want to bluffed if I check, but it felt like I was losing money so I started checking in this situation, sometimes even on turn only for opponent to turn over a marginal hand which he would of continued to call if I value bet.
I don't think there is an easy answer to this one as there is a lot too consider in each situation but any insight would be helpful. (maybe I should post an example hand, will try remember tonight)

Its very player dependent. Against alot of opponents I will check because I want them to bluff.

Against weaker, more passive players a scarecard for you either made their hand or its a scare card for them too. If you bet they might fold the hands you beat anyway because "he always has the flush". They wont bluff if they dont have it but they will bet if they do so just check and let them check. If they bet you fold.

Against good thinking players you just need to make sure youre thinking a level above them
