Default Advice please (cash game PL, 1/1)

Hey I'm not a losing player in general and I think this was a hand I just couldnt get away from. We're all friends who play though it's not a home game we play at my local casino with blinds of 1/1 - to keep it friendly and let anyone join in. (I'm UK so its pounds but it doent make a difference for what I'm asking.) Just give me some advice on the hand below.

I'll show my opponents cards so you can maybe help me out with his betting.

    8 players PLH

    Me on button.

    Dealt to me -

    raise PL - 1-4pounds

    Dealt to opponent -

    call 5 pounds

    Flop -

    I bet 6 pounds
    calls 6 pounds

    Turn -

    I bet 10 pounds
    raise 10 - 20pounds
    I call raise 10 pounds

    River -

    I bet all-in 28 pounds
    Insta-call

    Straight over trip jacks/decent kicker.

The guy is actually very good and I play alot with him but I just didnt put him on a gutshot. He's not one to call preflop to a raise with cards like that and certainely I didnt expect him to call with a gutshot. Ok he hit it and re-raised me but he's good, I took that to seeing where he thought I was in the hand. I may have been able to get away from the hand if the last card were not a jack but any tips for the future would be great. Could anyone put anyone on cards like that? I put him on J2/3/4.

    Help!

I think I'm going to move this over to SHNL? I dont know a damned thing about PL, though I think a turn fold is pretty standard. Might be results oriented, though.

Checking the turn is good because their are so many hands that beat you besides a turned gutshot. A bigger Jack or any kind of suited connector that just made or already had 2 pair. You have position, use it. After betting the turn fold. I don't understand how you opened the betting on the river if you were the button...

    but he's good....I put him on J2/3/4.

Yeah actually I dont know why I said that, I really didnt know what to put him on. Thanks for teh advice I may have been confused over the button I was pretty steamed at the time and was just trying to remember.

I do appreciate any advice and you say about position, I think I'll search for some threads just on position and have a good read. Cheers I'm still learning so I'll get back to the books.

Yeah check the turn. Or if the dynamic really is that you often win here vs J2, then this is unavoidable. Alternatively, how often does he raise the turn without having TPMK beat? Turn raises are in general so rarely bluffs..

I didnt know people rarely bluffed on the turn, thanks for that. Yeah I know Gabe top pair isnt much at all really, but it was the river that killed me though I was drawing dead.

I appreciate all the feedback guys and I can see now I really should have folded. I've gotta concentrate a little more.
