Default $25NL, pocket 8's on semi scary board

Based on the conversations in another thread I don't think leading out on the turn here, as I did, is the best line.

However, if I had checked the turn what is the best line if villian then bets something in the range of $1.5 to $2?

Also, as played I would think that this has to be a fold on the river, correct?

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (9 handed) Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    MP2 ($14.75)
    MP3 ($27.95)
    CO ($24.55)
    Button ($16.60)
    SB ($25)
    BB ($24.55)
    Hero ($40.35)
    UTG+1 ($16.30)
    MP1 ($23.55)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 8, 8.
    Hero calls $0.25, 2 folds, MP2 calls $0.25, 2 folds, Button raises to $1, 2 folds, Hero calls $0.75, MP2 folds.

    Flop: ($2.60) 5, 3, T (2 players)
    Hero checks, Button checks.

    Turn: ($2.60) 5 (2 players)
Hero bets $1.75, Button calls $1.75.

    River: ($6.10) 6 (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $4, Hero ????

Any reads or stats on villian?

Actually, I don't like the Limp/Call PF from UTG. That SCREAMS "I have a middle PP!" Raise it up!

Villians Check behind on flop is either weakness or a trap. It does give you a little license to bet that turn though, which IMHO is fine.

I would've also liked a blocking bet on the river, like $3.5 -- $4 or so since you started the post-flop aggression, but a check is also fine. Villian played this very weak overall, and unless his stats are like 5/3 or something, I'm calling his river "value" bet and not really worrying about it too much, the only strength he's shown was Pre-flop, and even that was mediocre. In a vacuum, this is a call for me.

Edit: Per your second question, had you checked turn and villian lead: It depends on your style I guess. Did you play your 88 just for set value? It looks like it, so just fold and move on. IMO both OP and Villian played this really passively.

Villain looks like he has overcards or TT. There are a lot more overcard possibilities so I'd call the river. I also don't mind leading the turn since villain can easily be drawing to 6 outs.

Also, if I checked the turn I'd call and check river hoping he gives it up or bets small enough to call.

what range do you put him on?

I would raise this preflop and therefore bet the flop so you wouldn't be in this situation. Also, as Chris says, limp/calling in EP is so readable. I like the turn bet as played, and I think you now have to call the river. If you have any read on opp that would help a lot though.

you bet 77 and ace rag with a pair. If you think hes bad enough to call with worse then bet it.
