Default Operation "Are You Kidding Me?"

Hey all. I'm in a really pissed off mood right now so I'm gonna make my first post and come back tomorrow or something. For those who don't know I am in the process of rebuilding my bankroll. I'm currently sitting at $630 in Full Tilt, and I have about $110 in my rb account. I would like to wait until the $1k mark to move back up to $25nl (finally) since apparently I am the swingiest micro-stakes player ever made. This op. is entitled "Are You Kidding Me?" because I am in disbelief at how long it is taking to get back to at least $25nl.

I played really off and on for the first couple months of the year at mtt's and sng's, and I just hate them (even though I won one small mtt for like $280 loldonkaments). So in March I decided to return to cash games and play 6max at ftp w/ rb. I only got to play like 9k hands in March and I ran at 5BB/100 and made like 4.5 buy-ins in rb (ftp 10nl rake is insanely high so the rb is pretty high as well). I've played 5k hands already in April (6-tabling 6max) and I'm down 7 buy-ins running -7BB/100 for a grand total of .75BB/100 for my 1st 14k hands back (not including rb). The purty graph can be found below.

So I'm going to be updating this as I go along and maybe in like 4 months I'll have my $25nl bankroll from rb alone lol. So wish me luck if you read this. Oh ya I should post a few obligatory amusing hands...

Are you coming out ahead playing for rakeback at 10 nl on FTP? Is the rake double what it is at stars 10nl?

I wish you the best of luck, Martin. But please, don't turn this into a bad beat thread. I'm often tempted to do so with my own op thread, but I know that if I lament over them too much, it will distract me from examining my mistakes and leaks.

ftp rake caps at $2 so when you double up you only net $8.

Ya you're right. Dwelling on bad beats isn't healthy. I know everybody has been on a slew of coolers and bad beats before and has seen all the hh's of such as well. I'll not let this become a whine-fest.

I used to play 8 tables of full ring, but I can play the same amount of hands/hour playing 6 tables of 6-max, and I'm doing pretty good at watching the action to spot the nits/fish/maniacs/etc. Also, I've always had a really hard time playing aggro preflop at full ring. Plus, I enjoy being in position way more often than at full ring.

can you post your basic preflop stats from 10 nl and your last try at 25 nl? You have to have some leaks that need fixing, but I've never seen you post many hands for help. I'm no great shakes either, but if we all put our heads together....

I never played 6-max at 25nl so those stats won't really matter. Currently at 10nl 6-max I am 18/14 overall. Stats look like the following from each position...
    UTG: 11.5/11.5
    HJ: 13/13
    CO: 24/21
    BTN: 25/23
I am winning progessively more from ep to lp. My W$SD is 51.5%. My Att. to Steal Blinds is right about 30%.

Well those were a joke (the obligatory amusing hands).

In regards to posting hands that I'm unsure of...I know this may sound bad, but I honestly don't come across many hands at all where I feel I played wrong or felt lost at some point. The players I play with are never tricky, and it's really really easy to put them on hands most of the time.

Also, I made some filters to see how I'm doing with certain types of hands...
    Suited Connectors (45-JT): Clear Winner
    Suited Gappers (64-J9): Slight Loser
    Suited Aces (A2-A9): Slight Winner
    Offsuit Broadway: Slight Winner
    Suited Broadway: Clear Winner
    Pairs: lol

Also, I've gotten dealt JJ (my highest # dealt of pairs) 20 more times than AA (3rd lowest) so far. So I'm guessing if that were to even out anytime soon things may look a bit nicer. On the bright side my rb alone from these 14k hands will add 3BB/100 to my winrate.

lol i really don't think it's a leak. i've just played so many hands overall, i'm really disciplined, and i don't tilt. i do try to offer my advice to other ppl's hh's as much as i can so it's not like i'm just in my own little world.

I guess a worse J could call a bet. It would suck a ton to get raised here though too.

This would be a sick spot to bluff raise and you aren't running into many sick players. You are getting called by most pocket pairs as well as every worse jack.

It also seemed that you just played against people who either got the nuts (like the straight on the flop) or at least one pair, hmm, looks like bad luck.
Up to what amount do you actually want to build your bankroll?
  23. #23
pankfish, i meant to tell you that you are right about vbetting river. regardless of whether or not a pp calls, i need to get more value from a worse J so you were right.

ya those hh's in my original post were pretty much just me whining about bad beats (lame). as far as bankroll size goes, what do you mean? how big until i move up or what?

1384 hands today and -$5.90 (made like $7-8 in rb though). I doubled up twice on 2 very uninteresting hands. I lost 1 stack in the hand below. The rest was just slow bleeding/having to pay shorties with decent hands (and them sucking out some)/etc. Total br is ~ $760

EDIT: I added a 2nd hand from today.

Didn't really give credit to limp/3bet from the CO. I've seen small-mid pairs and really random crap do it in the past plenty of times.

can't wait to get out of 10nl. i just added up all the pots where i grossed at least 100bb's (netted at least 80bb's cuz rake caps at $2) and at any other site like stars where the rake caps at $1 i'd be up an extra $31 just from 200bb pot hands (even more counting all the smaller hands that got above $1 in rake). i may just get the bankroll to like $800 and throw in another $200 myself cuz i'm so sick of ftp 10nl rake lol.

Only played like 15 mins or so since the 24th, but I managed to win about $25.50 (like 100 hands) so that's nice. The one big hand from that session is below. Total br is about $780 now. I got a week off right now in between semesters so hopefully I can get in a good amount of hands. We'll see how that goes though with GTA coming out tomorrow lol.

Hi Martin. Just read through the thread. I only saw one instance where you posted your stats (18/14) at the beginning of the month, tight, but not too nitty for 6-max.

Something else is wrong here, because from the hands that you are posting, you seem to be getting your money in good mostly. There has to be a leak, or opportunity to improve somewhere? Can you post up your current stats? Including W$WSF and AF? I can't believe that the quality of the players are any better/worse than at PokerStars... and from some of the posted hands, they aren't. Are you using PT, or PokerOffice? I recognize that type of graph, but not which program it comes from. How about a HUD?

And lastly, what is the reason for waiting to 40BI to move to $25NL?

I look forward to trying to help out anyway that I can!

Hey there. I'm still 18/14 (about 24/21 from the btn and 12/12 from utg). My W$WSF is 36%. My total AF is 3 (flop = 4.5, turn = 2.5, river = 2.2). My W$SD is 52%. My Attempt to Steal is 30%. I use PT and Realtime HUD btw. As for 40 buyins, well in my experience I swing a bunch at micros and I feel very comfy with $1k at $25nl. As stated before chris, the rake at ftp $10nl is disgusting which would account for at least like 5-6 buyins at this point I think. Thanks for your concern and help man.

Hmmm. I'm going to assume your WTSD is around 20-25%, but that shouldn't matter too much, and I don't know what conclusions could be drawn unless the number is way outside that range... I think that stat only applies to hands that see the flop? I'll have to look that up...

Here are my thoughts. Your W$WSF is too low in relation to your VPIP/PFR. This could mean one of a couple things. You are not C-Betting enough. If you are C-Betting 80% or higher, you are not continuing on the turn, and letting someone else take over the aggression. Or you could be assigning too small of ranges to your opponents when they fight back at you, so you fold a little too much. 6-max on the whole is looser than at FR. In my experience (not recent) I found that villians were much more willing to get the action going at the smaller tables. Your 18% range is going to be much better than your villians a lot of the time, don't fold!

Your AF is good, you definitely tend to bet more than you call (folding is not part of the calculation) which is leading me to believe that you might Check/Fold, and Bet/Fold a lot when somebody plays back at you. W$SD is a good mark, nothing wrong there.

AttSteal looks a little weak, you could be trying to steal a little more in position with mediocre hands (68s+, Q2s+) when folded to you. Naturally Bet/Folding nearly ALL FLOPS when you do this.

Good to see that you are using a HUD, That can help out immensely. Have you looked at the PT3 beta? I'm liking it personally, lots of improvements. 40BIs should feel very comfortable for any given level, but at the same time, if it feels too comfortable, you can find yourself making too many Hero-calls, as 1-buyin doesn't "mean" enough to you. Not saying that this is the case, as it's hard to determine that from stats. But swingy likely means high-variance play, and that would fit as a possible problem area?

The rake SUCKS at FTP for 10NL. What is your effective rake after Rakeback though? Does it compare to Stars then?

You really need to play at pokerstars until you hit 25nl. The rake at FTP makes it near impossible and it's not like the games are better there.

Is there some reason you don't like pokerstars? I think the microstakes are much better on stars. At FullTilt the micros are filled with regs and short stackers and the software tilts me. I like there tourney structure though.

i'm just really used to ftp software (which i'm a fan of). i also like rakeback, and i don't play enough hands to shoot for supernova or anything. personally, i don't seem to have too much trouble finding bad players either.

Or you could be assigning too small of ranges to your opponents when they fight back at you, so you fold a little too much. 6-max on the whole is looser than at FR. In my experience (not recent) I found that villians were much more willing to get the action going at the smaller tables. Your 18% range is going to be much better than your villians a lot of the time, don't fold!
i hadn't really looked at my cbet% in a long time. it was a bit over 50% which i'm not happy with so i've started cbetting a bit more when i don't think it's -EV. i've also started 2-barreling a bit more on turn cards that may be scary to villain's range.

i wasn't stealing with Qxs and Kxs automatically which i now am.

Not saying that this is the case, as it's hard to determine that from stats. But swingy likely means high-variance play, and that would fit as a possible problem area?
i understand the concern, but i'm a very disciplined player. no worries in this department. if anything i don't make enough hero calls.

i dunno but i deposited $200 more as it was taking way too long to get to 40 buy-ins so hopefully i will never have to deal with ftp 10nl rake again.

Well, that certainly is an interesting way to accomplish your goal!

Sounds like the adjustments I would've suggested are already part of your game!

GL at $25NL, I'll hopefully be there soon myself again...Though I personally don't need 40BIs...
    Hey knucklehead! Bonk!

all i can say is wow. this is officially the worst moment of my poker career. i'm not even sure what to do right now. i guess maybe i should take a break or something. whenever i decide to play again i will be dropping back down to 10nl because i am now down to $759 after 10k hands at 25nl. i was up about 2 buy-ins after like 2k hands and then proceeded to hit a 15 buy-in downswing. i played 1900 hands tonight and dropped almost 8 buy-ins. i swear i didn't even tilt. i had kk<aa 3 times, aa<kk 1 time, aa<a7 1 time, sets getting runner-runnered 2 times, and this one topped it all off:

    $0.1/$0.25 No Limit Holdem
    6 players
    Converted at weaktight.com

    Stacks:
    UTG ($29.55)
    UTG+1 ($23.30)
    CO ($32.20)
    BTN ($24.65)
    SB ($18.35)
    Hero ($25.25)

    Pre-flop: ($0.35, 6 players) Hero is BB
    1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.25, 1 fold, BTN raises to $1.10, 1 fold, Hero raises to $2.50, UTG+1 folds, BTN goes all-in $24.65, Hero calls $22.15

    Flop: ($49.65, 2 players)

    Turn: ($49.65, 2 players)

    River: ($49.65, 2 players)

    Final Pot: $49.65
    Hero shows:
    BTN shows:

    BTN wins $47.20 ( won +$22.55 )
    Hero lost -$24.65
    UTG+1 lost -$0.25

    here's the sweet graph:

this never seems to end for me. i always think, "man, it will even out one day" but it doesn't. i just don't get it. i see all these other guys around me (on ftr) steadily moving up with minimal variance and posting their 12bb/100 graphs for like 20k hands, and i just get this crap over and over again. i'm not a laggy spewtard. i'm not a terribad weaktight nit. seriously wtf? i dunno maybe i'll try out stars or something. whatever i need a break...

This word variance is starting to grate on me also. I mean WTF right? These are the micro limits, we should be destroying everything down here!

I agree with the take a break sentiment. I might take a couple days off myself after my own current downswing/break-even stretch.

Nothing I can say or do will take the edge off of getting sucked out on again and again, sorry bout that. The only thing I will say is that I believe in the MATH, and the MATH makes me happy. If I keep getting my money in as a 70/30 or better, I'm going to eventually win some moola. If not, then I really am just unlucky at this game, and happy I'm not trying to make a living off of it...yet.

Chin up man. Take a week off. This is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, and if you are not enjoying it even when you're getting the worst of it, maybe other interests would suit you. If you can figure out how to turn your anger into elation, then you win every time you sit at the table, no matter what the cards bring.

    Tough break

I often find when analysing after a tough run that there were many hands that I barely even noticed in which I tilted or played badly. The amount these hands affect your winrate is quite significant imo. If you can't see anything like this, post your stats or something, complete with pokerEV graph and setometer.

after a bad run I always go to pokertracker and check on a few key stats.

First, I check if my position stats have gotten any looser/tighter since my last good run. I have a tendency to have my EP VPIP slowly creep up until I am running too loose from there.

Second, I filter for my PP's to see if A)I am overplaying non set hands too much/playing overpairs too weak, and B) I am overplaying sets so much that I am not getting maximum value out of them. IMO extracting maximum value from each and every best hand should be your sole goal at micro stakes because people there are more than happy to pay you off.

If I haven't found any glaring errors by now, I will usually filter for my cold calling ranges and see if I have started to do this too much, which is another leak I have.

GL getting it turned around. A couple of thorough reviews should help you find some small leaks that can lead to big changes in winrates. and also some big ones that can completely turn things around. sometimes it's something that you didn't even think of or wouldn't have even considered a leak.

ya i'll go back through all my hands tomorrow prob. i did check to see how many times i've been dealt AA compared to other pairs and it's last place with 1st being like 25 times ahead. i'm also not flopping my expected number of sets. i will look for actual leaks though as well. thanks for the encouragement guys.

You seem/should be good enough to be ahead of the fish in this poker race thing. Need to figure out what/where your leaks are. Dunno how best to do that. Maybe post your 10nl 2008 general, position and more detail tabs to be taken apart? There must be something... beats and coolers happen loads, but that isn't the whole story.

a thought, maybe too much attachment to hands? I've been folding heaps this week - I had a big downswing which was bugging me. Something like 12 buy-ins (at 50nl). Thought about it loads, I think I was trying to force play too much - my stats were looking almost identical to now, but I'm playing far differently. Stats are only part of a story... Anyway, I'm weaker. Folding seems to be working out ok. I think that playing 13 tables is good for that as well - 8 at FT and 5 on everest. I don't want complicated decisions. Funny too, I'm finding FT way easier, seems that I understand TAG-fish better than weak-fish...

anyway, don't bother depositing again - that remaining $750 can grow well enough as it is, and moving up without crushing the current level is -EV. Thinking about it today, if you beat a level at 5ptBB/100, then every 1000 hands is a buyin - so 20k hands and you can move up at most levels. If not, then it probably isn't time...
