We had a similar jackass in a neighboring county a few years back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Hege

    Code:
Hege took Buford Pusser and Joe Arpaio as a role models.

I'm ignorant, I thought Joe Arpaio's style was good because it made jail life as tough as it could be legally made and crime in Arizona has dropped significantly since he was elected. What am I missing?

How do we allow douches like that to remain in a position of power? That makes me angry.

Why is he constantly being re-elected? I heard he wins by a pretty fair margin too.

a little town called none of your goddamn business
i found it laughably ironic that arpaio's whole deal was reducing the cost of prisoner upkeep, and then i read all the shit at the bottom of the article about how the county had to dish out over 40 million$ in settlements.

lol i was kind of half joking. yes i think we should spend more money on these fuck heads that commit violent crimes over and over and put them in super comfortable beds, and give them nice gourmet meals.

Theres a very big line that separates humane and gourmet imo. As well as dehumanizing and rehabilitating. People make stupid decisions and mistakes and they deserve to pay for them. It doesn't mean that they need to be degraded to a form lower then animals.

I wasn't making an argument. I simply asked why he keeps getting re-elected.

what if it deterred crime and really worked? also fwiw, i think wiki is highly unreliable for anything political. if you want to find out the history of an apple it should be okay.

I like a lot of the stuff he does. Seems he takes some of the stuff a bit too far though, including the food thing, heat thing, and constantly getting sued and costing his county a lot of money thing.

Count me in the group that doesn't think that jails and prisons should be leisure centers.

In October 2005, Arpaio started mandatory two-week English classes for non-English-speaking inmates at his jails. Classes last two hours a day. The curriculum comprises the three branches of government, how a bill becomes law, state government, law enforcement and court services, and jailhouse "situational" terminology. At the end of the two-week course, inmates are required to take a test to see how well they have learned about American government, the words to God Bless America, and the communication of health and safety needs. In response to critics, Arpaio responded, "These inmates happen to be incarcerated in the United States of America and in Maricopa County where I run the jails. We speak English here, not foreign languages."
Brilliant, and I mean that quite literally.
