    **** SPOILERS ****

overall a pretty damn good show

    1) Brock Lesnar was impressive as shit. Wow. He totally dominated the fight. I'm not sure if I like/dislike how he reacted after beating Mir's ass, and his post-fight comments....Part of me says it was a little too much and a classless move, but the other part of me says why not? Mir ran his mouth and he got his ass whooped, he deserves it I guess. As for the WWE promo Lesnar cut......lol, it was interesting.

    2) GSP is a fucking badass, but how tough is Alves to just keep coming like that? I liked that fight, and would love to hear when GSP pulled his groin as he still was able to kick Alves' ass.

    3) Henderson destroyed Besping, that was awesome to see. What a knock-out.

    4) Akiyama was pretty impressive too, I liked his fight against Bisping. I thought Akiyama won and was surprised how Rogan and his partner thought differently.

Lesnar was such a douche. Mir did run his mouth prior to the fight but Lesnar did too and you expect that with two people that don't have a good history. The difference was after where Lesnar gets in his face after the fight, comes off like a total ass in the post fight interview (funny, but still an ass) and Mir simply said in the end, "Yeah he fought a great fight etc etc."

No fucking shit! That was savage. I was actual a kind of surprised they didn't even seem slightly concerned with the dude still knocked out after like 5 mins. They were pretty much doing the post fight interview while buddy's in the background getting revived. Pretty funny.

    1) I understand the whole "respect" and "fighting with honor" aspect of MMA. But after months of Mir talking absolute shit on Lesnar, how is it bad that he punked him out like he did? If you disrespect your opponent first and then get STFUPWNED, you deserve to be shown up. This isn't fucking tennis.

    2) Apparently the media is running with this like crazy. Everyone's jumping on "what a poor sport Lesnar is" bandwagon. What he did was wrong, but it wasn't THAT wrong...

    3) What was MORE wrong was how Dan Henderson ended his fight with Besping, yet no one is talking about that. Henderson knocked the guy out cold and KNEW IT, yet went in and threw another devastating punch while the guy was down. Absolutely brutal. Apparently flipping off the crowd, talking some shit, and cutting a WWE-style promo is way worse.

    4) Galapogos -- what was Mir supposed to say? He did the right/smart thing by saying, "Yeah, he whipped my ass," in so many words.

    5) Dana White sets up Fedor vs. Brock?

I love having the following conversation:

Guy with affliction and UFC gear: oh man I fucking love gsp! He's the best fighter in the world!

Me: you're kidding right? Haven't you ever heard of fedo emelianenko?

    Douchebag: who?

    Or

Me: are you a UFC fan or an MMA fan?

    Douchebag: UFC is way better.

He could have continued on the same line as before or made a comment about how he acted after the fight. Or made dumb excuses. I'll admit I'm not a hardcore fan so I only watch the PPV's more for something to do than anything, but wasn't Lesnar bitching about how he should have won their last fight after it? Whether he should have won it or not, I think it's just dumb to whine after you lose and I'm only saying Mir showed class after the fight where Lesnar didn't.

It's weird, I was rooting for Lesnar at the start (like I said I'm a casual fan = loyalties changing as randomly as alliances in the WWE) but when he didn't touch gloves I thought he was a total douchebag. Don't get me wrong, I love it in sports where guys compete hard and beat the shit out of each other, but I really like it when good sportsmanship in still shown through it all. Lame, I know, but whatever.

Well, I love Lesnar. He is definitely a massive toolbox (Dough Lee edition), but I don't watch MMA for anything other than people getting beat the fuck up, and Lesnar is good for that.

I think I need to get into betting on MMA. Looks like there could be a lot of money made due to things like people thinking that Mir actually stood a chance. Apparently, those people never watched teh first fight where Lesnar beat the shit out of him but lost due to a small mistake. Was very impressed this time around at Lesnar's judgment since he was so determined to not lose this match that he played as conservatively as possible, and thus reduced his likelyhood of losing as much as possible given that it was his aggression that caused him to make the fatal mistake in the previous fight.

Anyways, what I want is for Lesnar to dominate the hell out of everybody (which he will do because there is simply no competition for him), then fight Fedor and get his ass beat.

I think Lesnar v Fedor will be Fedor's toughest match, but I think he will win. Lesnar is essentially a beast who will beat anybody but the absolute best, and Fedor is exactly that. My read is that Fedor's training for Lesnar will revolve around going the distance and wearing Lesnar out. This is really the only sure way to train against him since he's just simply going to dominate the early game, but due to size he will also be worse than normal in the late game.

IMO Fedor will train to keep it on the feet. Fedor can stand up with Mirko, and if he can do that he can stand up with anybody. Lesnar will simply not be able to catch Fedor, but Fedor will definitely get a few awesome shots in.

Fedor will do everything he can to stay off his back. On his back, it would be like fighting Hong Man Choi again, but without the super easy submission, and without that he is going to lose on his back. Fedor will probably be able to get Lesnar on his back eventually, but I suspect that will be either late game or inadvertent. The problem when fighting Lesnar is that you're simply just not going to be the favorite in the ground game. It's possible that somebody of Fedor's caliber could be, but I kinda doubt it. Lesnar is just too big and too fast. This is such a huge deal that being a favorite against him in ground game would mean that Fedor would simply have to be a god, which is entirely possible.

Anyways, Fedor v Lesnar will be the fight of the century IMO

The MMA scoring system is really bad and that's not news.

I dunno, I actually thought he won (not going by any point scoring system, just the feel of the fight). I thought it was ridiculous that somebody scored the fight 30-27 Akiyama, but I thought he won two of the three rounds for sure (I don't remember which two).

IMO they should trash scoring, and whenever a fight is not won via KO or TKO it's considered a draw and a rematch is scheduled.

Yeah pretty much just threw that out there. I just wanna see more knockouts. Also wanna bring back the Colosseum. Violent criminals being forced to fight to the death would fix the economy also.

AKiyama was beautifully bronzed. I think he definitely won the fight (based on the scoring system), but the judge who scored it 30-27 was totally on crack.

VQC (and Fnord) thoughts wanted on UFC 100 in general, not just the Akiyama fight

Also, is UFC ready to go mainstream? I'm befuddled as to why they waited this long to do as much coverage as they did. Apparently they (ESPN) scoffed at the idea of having UFC on ESPN (as did other prime time networks years ago), now they know it'd be a cash cow. Funny how things change.

I'm sure purists (VQC and others) would love to see it stay as "underground" as possible, but this seems like a force that cannot be stopped.

P.S. I heard the other day that the UFC was worth $1.1 BILLION dollars. It was purchased for $2 million. Talk about a return on your investment, lol.

they should do something before we have to watch Silva get booed by the crowd while some POS lays on his back and hopes he'll fall in for 5 rounds (again). And GSP has had 2-3 unwatchable fights lately. People figuring out the best way to get points and not get hurt is what killed boxing imo and it can easily kill the UFC. My wife watched all the fights and slept through GSP. We don't want scorers, we want to see people get beat up and legs locked and arms barred.

huge KO bonuses? with a big reduction in money won if it is a decision? i dunno, could lead to tampering. but something.

Also they should implement the 2 round, only get a round 3 if it's tied system that has been used in TUF so bad fights take less time. Sure there is an occasional turn around in round 3, but you could use the same argument for adding X rounds to every fight.
  31. #31
GSP beat the shit out of Alves. I made the comment somewhere around round 3 that most every other fighter would have been done, but that guy kept coming. No doubt it wasn't a knock-out-slugfest, but c'mon, it's not like GSP just grappled with him the whole time. He took him down and beat the shit out of a bigger guy. What should he have done, kept the fight standing and fight at a slight disadvantage? Hell, even if standing up the whole time GSP is 50/50 (or slightly better), why would he do that?

I didn't say he should do anything different, I said it was boring. And the UFC should attempt to structure things so that boring fight are not rewarded. People don't want to see GSP or anyone lay on top of someone else and punch them with no hope of a KO/tap. If the hendo & lesnar fights had gone the same way with 1.5M buys it would have been a disaster.

boxing was huge with Tyson because he got knock outs. People like Holyfield and Lewis came in, won 12 rounders, and so now we have the UFC getting those PPVs instead. But you charge them 60 bucks enough times to watch Silva vs Leitis and they'll go.

Never read any stickies or announcements
throw 2 guys in a cage and let them fight until one of them dies or gets knocked unconscious.

    give them swords if necessary.

Zuffa has production down pat. The show ran very smoothly as far as I'm concerned.

The fights were all relatively exciting. I watched UFC 100 with a bunch of attorneys, many of whom had little MMA experience. On the whole, I think they enjoyed it. Fights like Henderson/Bisping really got everyone on their feet. On the other hand, I'm not sure anyone appreciated the domination GSP layed down on Alves. And I think much of the technical ground work is lost on the general public.

Ground work will always be the limiting factor for MMA's public appeal. GSP's domination got monotonous by the fifth round. I understand a great game plan, and GSP executed. But believe me, I was hoping Alves would knock GSP down or out whenever Alves got up. I'm not a fighter myself, but bottom half guard sucks even in BJJ. I hope that fighters will learn better half guard transitions so there is some incentive for GnPers to transition to side/mount.

At the same time however, good ground control is beautiful. To understand GSP's control is to understand the beauty of the human body. While the GSP fight got boring, I argue this is a side effect of the rules in general. I would hate for their to be rule changes that affects the ability for fighters to evolve the ground game. The point of MMA as a sport, in my mind at least, is to mimic a real fight. We've already taken way too many steps away from that, for the sake of making it mainstream. This may very well be why fights get more and more boring.

I think Fedor takes Barnett. Simply because its Fedor. Although Barnett has damn good ground game and may be able to pull out a sub. Fedor has had some "miraculous" wins (for all I know, he plans it that way), and I can always imagine Barnett pulling out an odd kneebar. As for Fedor v. Brock. I have no clue, Brock is disturbingly big and scary. Paulson is also a great trainer.

I really liked the 10 + 5 rounds in Japan. 10 minutes is much better for ground fighters and a better test of cardio.
  41. #41
Thanks for the post, VQC, I was looking forward to it. I'm not sure if I agree/disagree with you on how the general public feels about the ground game. I guess a total UFC noob might be yelling, "stand up and fight like a man," or something to that effect. But once they learn how the game is played they should start to understand it and appreciate it. At least that's the hope.

That said, I guess I'm not your typical UFC fan. I've been watching and/or keeping track of the sport since around it's infancy (a buddy of mine and I used to rent the UFC matches on video when they were first coming out, back when Gracie was dominating). I don't have a wrestling/fighting background, but I understand the sport and can appreciate things when the fight goes to the ground. Because of that, I loved the shit out of the GSP/Alves fight. GSP beat him up pretty good and dominated, but Alves kept coming back for more. I got the feeling that Alves might catch GSP, but in the end, GSP was just too damn good.

It'll be interesting to see how the UFC develops from here. Right now they're still an "underground" sport that's just starting to get covered by the mainstream media. They're starting to embrace it, but it's obvious that most people don't know what's really going on when they talk about it.

I'm hoping for a Brock/Fedor fight some day (as long as Fedor takes care of Barnett), but it's probably still another year (and more likely two years) away. That's probably a good thing, as there will be sooooooo much hype behind that fight it won't even be funny.

Also, lol at PTI (and other people in the mainstream media) debating whether or not the UFC has surpassed boxing and/or professional wrestling. It most definitely has with the 16-35yr old demographic, just not with the writers/reporters who are all way older than that. Given time, MMA (more likely just UFC) will be the fourth sport in America, joining football, basketball, and baseball.

  42. #42
I'm still kind of shocked that people didn't come down harder on Dan Henderson for knocking the shit out of an unconscious person. Granted, he really didn't like that guy and had beef with him, and you're not supposed to stop fighting until someone tells you to, but damn. I absolutely loved it, but wow.

Here's a funny .gif I found, posted in the "pictures that make you LOL" thread too...

  43. #43
    Also, lol at PTI
when they talked about it on ATH it was the first time everyone didn't totally hate on the UFC, has to be a good sign

Since I feel like you're hating on me I should say I like the ground as well and prefer fights to have some of both. I just don't like one guy totally over matching another for 5 rounds with no hope of anything changing. If that happens standing up it will almost always result in a KO/stoppage. but it's too hard to KO on the ground and after round 2 you almost never see submissions either. Watching say one of the diaz guys ju jitz around on the ground is fun.
  44. #44
I wasn't hating on anyone, especially not you! Just making general comments, sorry if I offended.
