Default Paid study at Caltech: recruiting poker experts (L.A. area)

Expert Qualifications: Plays at least 5 hrs a week and has attended a tournament in the last 6 months

    Experiment details:

We are recruiting "expert" poker players for an expert vs. novice decision making study at Caltech. In the experiment, you will be asked to play a simple game in which you have information that your rival does not have and he has information that you do not have. In other words, the game is a simulated task that captures some aspects of poker. It simulates card games in which you are asked to make a decision without knowing the hand of the other player. You'll receive $70 just for showing up and each of your decisions will earn you extra money. As in any card game, you can maximize your gains if you play well. The entire experiment should take no more than 1 hr.

[We will also reimburse travel expenses.]

Please reply to me (Stephanie Wang <sweiwang hss.caltech.edu>) if you are interested and let me know which days/times would work.
Also, please feel free to forward to any other "poker experts" you think may be interested.

    Default Clarification

We are only looking for poker experts in the LA area.
Apologies for the lack of clarity in the original posting.

I can tell you the results will be both experts and novices perform the same. Given the same lvl of aptitude for the game, the only difference between experts and novices is familiarity with game situations.

Just like athletes of different games. They could have similar physical abilities, but one knows rugby situations and the other knows football situations. You could test them both at the same physical drills and they'll both net similar results.

edit of course, i dunno shit about the game you're gonna make them play. I just imagine it measure certain poker intangibles.

I approve of this thread, but only if we see results from Ms. Wang.

    I demand Wang.
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

I did tell her that we would be interested in any follow-up info on this experiment she could share with us when the time comes. I hope rilla is proven wrong, as that would just be boring.

My bet is, that the Novices overtake the experts, because the experts will refuse to take marginal positions, and the novices over a short bursts will be lucky jerks.

rilla knows better than to be serious about presuming the results of scientific data before said data is gathered.

    Hello, Stephanie.

    This experiment sounds very interesting.

You may certainly post about it in our forum. You will get the most eyeballs and responses in our general lounge, FTR Community:
    http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...unity-f14.html

Go ahead and create a forum account and post it there. I'd be interested in all follow-up info you could share about this experiment, so we'd be delighted if you kept us all updated in the topic.

    John

    Dear John,

I got your contact information from xxxxxxxx (through xxxxxxx) and was wondering if the following blurb could be posted on your poker forum to recruit poker experts in the area (Pasadena/LA) for a study we are running at Caltech.
Thank you very much for our time.
