Default Operation: Spenda Stole My Operation Name

I don't think it's much of a secret that I haven't been playing much poker in the past year or so. I got married in August 07 and started grad school the next month, so I decided to take some time off. Well here I am almost a year and half later. I'm in my last semester of my masters program and my schedule right now is a joke. I only have to do stuff two days a week. Because of this, I decided that this would be a good time to start playing again.

Last Monday, I put $600 on FT and started grinding 25NL. I played my first 6k hands and...I got crushed. I was down 6-buys and pretty frustrated. I talked to one of my irl friends that plays 400NL+ for a living and figure out that I was playing like a spewtard. Since then, I've started playing better and over the next 8K hands, I made it to $1000 and was ready to move up to 50NL.

    Here's my 25NL graph:

You can see the spewage and where I adjusted my play.

Since I moved up to 50NL, things have gone pretty well. I'm up 6-buys after 3.5K hands. I did go through a stretch where I started playing bad again, but I recognized it and took a break before playing again. As long as I stop beating myself, I should be playing 100NL very shortly. My plan right now is to move up to 100NL when I hit $2000, and then move up to 200NL when I hit $7000-$8000.

I called this "Play Poker" because that's really my only goal. I'm not trying to make X amount of money or play X amount of hands, I'm just trying to play when I have time and play well.

Ugh, I just played a very frustrating session where I was up 4-buys at one point but ended up even because I lost a bunch of big pots. I think I played really well so it wasn't because of tilt or spewing or anything like that.

This guy was a 63/13, I'm more than happy to get it in here.

Even with the rough hands you're still at 5ptbb/100, right?

In regards to the first hand, do you always bet 2/3 of the pot on the flop or is it just because you're not sure enough hands call a bigger bet? If you're cool with getting it all in with this hand then why not build a bigger pot?
    Check out my self-deprecation here!
  4. #4
    Yeah, I'm still at 6.5ptbb/100 so I can't really complain .

As for the first hand, the bet sizing is very much based on the villian. Vs a 63/13, I believe that these type of players are going to call down very light, so I'm going to try for 3 streets of value. I don't think he'll stack off with something like 77, but I do think he'll call 3 half-pot bets with a hand like that. When he minraises the cbet in this particular hand, I think a lot of times it's a queen or a 6 trying to "see where he's at", and I think getting it in on the flop or turn here is fine. I just chose to wait til the turn on this hand and he happened to have a set, ul.

Another factor is that I play 8 tables so sometimes I get lazy with the bet sizes.

-1.5 buys today over 1600 hands. Not really much I can do, I'm just running bad.

This guy was 3-betting me with any 2 (saw him showdown 25o once)

Just stick his short stack in PF unless you also think he'll call flop if he misses.
Just dipping my toes back in.

He's a fullstack, I'm playing 50NL. But yeah, I probably could have just shoved PF.

Last night I went to play some live poker. There's a bar near me that runs a 200NL charity game, I ended +$244 on the night. I've gone there 5 times total and I'm up $1955. SHIP

This is something I definitely don't do enough of and is probably the best line when flopping a set OOP in a multiway pot.

Live poker is where the real fish are. The problem is that we can't multitable at bars and casinos. So variance is a bitch and hourly earn caps out way too low.
    Check out my self-deprecation here!

Yeah, I think I'm going to limit myself to only playing at the bar on Friday and Saturday nights since all the drunks (and 35 year old women) seem to come out those nights.

Just played a 1900 hand session where I kept playing big pot after big pot and ended +4 buys. It was pretty crazy.

Bleh, I should have just dumped the flop. I thought he would just shove PF with AK so I didn't think he had a K. I play bad.

Played a quick 1k hand session today and broke even. I'm sorry this thread has basically been a hand dump so far. Once I start playing 100NL, I should start playing some hands that warrant more discussion.

    Anyway, today's big hands:

Ugh I've broken even over my last 6K hands. I'm running really bad but I'm going to take a look at some hands and see if I'm playing bad too. So gross.
  21. #21
Well I reviewed a bunch of hands and I think I'm just running bad. Still, I'm gonna put in a big session this afternoon and I'm only gonna 6 tables instead of 8. I'm determined to make it to 100NL by the end of the week.

I know you've done this before, but aiming for a specific time to reach a certain limit can't put you in the right head-space for playing good poker.
    Check out my self-deprecation here!
  23. #23
Yeah, you're definitely right about that.

Not having a real downswing after those hands is a positive!

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I haven't played much online, I've been going to the bar to play quite a bit though. I went there 3 times this weekend and ended +$734. I still haven't had a losing session there.

bob your preflop 3bet and 4bet sizes are fucking attrocious. give people a chance to call with worse hands. it seems like all your doing now is getting in a variance war in those pots.

idk if you're just mashing the pot button for 3 and 4bets, but you need to think about it more than that. a good 3bet size is going to be raising $1.50 to $5-5.50, $2 to $6.50 or 7. 4bet size you want to be somewhere around 2.5x of the 3bet size as a generalization. there is just no need to 4bet to like 4.5x his 3bet size. if villain is going to fold, their going to fold to 2.5x, it also lets alot of people overestimate their FE when you do have a hand you're going to call a push with, and lets you get away much cheaper with 4bet bluffs.

Obviously that's one of the worst flops possible and there's a large chance he has a set, but I don't think I can just check/fold in a 4-bet pot when I have less than a PSB left. There's a small chance he has AK or TT also.

OK ok, here's an update: the last week of February I decided to try out Cake because I heard the games were super soft. I played a total of two sessions there and I ran just horribly. I had set over set 3 times, and 3 times where I had QQ/KK vs AA. Then in another hand I 3-bet AQ from the SB vs a button opener, the flop comes Q92 and he has 22, and there was a similar hand where I had AK on an A63 flop vs this total lagtard but he of course has 33. I'm not one of those people that's going to claim that it's rigged but I was running so awful that for the first time ever, the thought crept into my mind. Anyway all of that added up to a 9-buy in downswing over the 2000 hands I put in on Cake (after running awful on FT and not having a downswing that even approaches that which is what made it kinda suspicious).

Anyway, I moved back to FT and FT decided to really start shitting on me. When I made my last post here, I was running 2-buys over expectation and now I am currently 5-buys under expectation. This is normal but it sucks because it couldn't have come at a worse possible time. I also decided to play in that FTR HU tourney so if you add that all up, I might be dropping down to 25NL soon.

Also, it's been too cold to go to the beach all week.

yeah.. Bode is on the money with the 3bet/4betting sizing. I couldn't imagine 4bet bluffing if you are 4betting to 40bbs as you did in one hand. Your making your bluffs have to work a very large % of the time. Your also, as bode said, making it less likely to get called or shoved on with worse.

GG in the HU match today.

Edit - Also 4bet bluffing would be nearly impossible as you would have already put in over 1/3 of your stack into the pot. If villain shoved after you 4bet to 40bb then you would be calling 60bb into a pot >140bb, and getting 2.33:1 or better odds. So folding could most definitely be a mistake with a few hands.

Pretty funny that you posted this today since I just started playing again online today. I've been pretty busy with the end of school and job hunting (no luck so far) so the only time I've played poker was on the weekends when I went to the bar to donk around at 200NL live (up 4.5K since mid January). I actually cashed out my online roll about 3 weeks ago since I tilted off like 5 buys at the HU tables.

So now I'm back to playing. I'm going to stay away from the HU tables, if unger2000 catches me playing HU I owe him dinner. I FINALLY got rb on Full Tilt so that should be a big help. I also think I identified and fixed a bunch of leaks in my game including my 3-bet/4-bet sizes, checking when I should be bet/folding, and playing too loose UTG and UTG+1. So I'm feeling good and I should be posting updates now.

Hi guys, long time no see. So at the beginning of the year I had exactly 0 dollars online. I won some fantasy football league for $350 so I threw that online and started grinding it up. To make a long story short, I recently moved up to 200NL FR Rush. I'm putting in a ton of hands (and making a ton of rb). Keep it real FTR.

I've had a pretty nasty breakeven stretch over my last 35K hands although this really only amounts to 1 week. Just a lot of boring KK vs AA and set over set type hands. I'm still up ~$750 from rb though during this period so it's all good.

Yeah badger, I opened a couple 400NL tables today while I was playing Rush. I don't know how I ever played regular poker, it's so slow haha. I'm assuming you were at 1/both of those tables? What's your SN (PM?)

I need to do a better job of game selecting too. Sometimes, 200NL rush is "regville" and I need to recognize this and playing 100NL during those times.
