Spenda is the guy to talk to, but I would recommend a fitted set over a name brand. You will get way more out of a set that is fitted to you, than the extra 10 yards that is promised by one of the big names.

Go to the store try all the name brand ones find out which ones you like the best then get custom fitted. That is the most important part though.

If you can hit them outside before buying them that's the way to go. Do some research and due diligence to narrow it down to a few sets that fit your game. For a mid handicapper you're looking at irons that should be relatively easy to hit (cavity back) but not necessarily humongous game improvement irons for people who can barely get the ball airborne.

Try to find a demo day or a retailer that will allow you to demo the clubs. There is no substitute for hitting them outside. After you pick the set most places will custom fit them for little to no cost which will be things like length, shaft flex, grip size, and perhaps 1-2 more characteristics.

The place I've been going to has alot of used club for sale that you can try out. They probably have 20 sets of used irons. They will even give you 10-15 balls and it's at a driving range. It's where I bought my driver and 3 wood.

Today I tried (all cavity back and used):
    Ping Rapture Green dot-$439
    Nike SQ Machspeed-$349
and another I can't remember which was about $400. I think Calloway.

I liked the Ping clubs better then the others. I was told they were ~$1000 clubs. They are a bit longer than normal which fits my height (6'3")

I believe there's a demo day next weekend but that's probably more for new clubs.
I'll just keep trying them out till I find the ones that feel the best but right now I'm leaning towards the Pings if my wife will spen that much money.

    thx

Yea, when I got my fitted set I only hit them off the mats inside, and the trajectory wasn't quite as high as I might have liked.

If you golf a lot I definitely recommend a fitted set over used clubs. Granted, over 20 yr old irons, you will notice a positive difference regardless.
    ndultimate.

Got the used Pings. Best part is the wife paid for them

She also paid for the 20+ year old ones and she wasn't even Mrs. Sasquach then.

I can also trade these in at the same place for some new ones in the future if necessary unless I wait 20 years.

    thx for the help

Poker and golf are the two best games in the world. No matter how good you are (or think you are), there's always somebody that can kick your ass.

Now that you have the new clubs, hit them for a short while and see if they give you the results you want, if not, you may need them bent a little to match your lofts to your swing style... also check to be sure you are hitting balls matched to your swing speeds... good luck!
