Maybe it's a cultural thing. I found out that in German forums, people get pissy at you if you don't start posts by saying "Greetings" or "Hello [person you're replying to]." and signing off with Best regards [name].

Just an archaic etiquette politeness societal formula, but I don't find it in itself offensive in any way. I don't know abut you guys.
