If the whole visa circus ships me the right documents, I'll move to DC (not really, but Greenbelt) in early March for a Master's thesis internship.

I'll be staying for about 4 or 5 months, and don't know anything about the city. The only thing I've heard is that it's expensive to live there!

So, anyone from the area? What's cool and what's not cool? Are there any good strategies for finding a place to stay?

Well, all the Smithsonian museums are actually free admission, so I would recommend going to those. There's like 15 of them, so there's bound to be something that you'd enjoy. I particularly liked the Natural History Museum, the American History Museum, the American Indian Museum, and the Air and Space Museum.

The Newseum costs money to enter, but that's a really awesome place too.

If you like clubbing and nightlife, then Adam's Morgan, U Street, and M Street are the places to go.

I was there for one night once. Stumbled around some area with some bars and found a great jazz bar. No idea where. Got drunk and banged some chick from the Air Force back at her barracks.

Now, lotsa folks'll tell you that you're looking for something compact, reliable, with enough stopping power to deter your run of the mill mugger but also not so much bark that you're more scared than he is.

Those folks don't know shit.

For my money, the GE M134 Minigun 7.62 mm is everything you're looking for in a weapon to protect yourself and all those you deem worthy to live in this world with you.



It's a little bit cumbersome, but its sleek, timeless profile and spin up time of no more than 1.5 seconds will repel ne'er-do-wells and attract the buxom sort of lass that likes to feel safe with her man. Imagine the looks you'll get striding down the street with the kind of hardware that says you're dangerous.

I'm pretty sure the Greenbelt/College Park area is very safe. You're quite a bit outside the city there. Just for frame of reference, you're equidistant between Ronald Reagan Airport (DC's downtown airport) and BWI (an airport just south of Baltimore). I mean, you're within a half hour of each, so you're in the mix of things, but DC stereotypes won't really apply to where you are (except things will be expensive and there'll be a shitton of traffic).
