Default Making notes before you play?

Just wondering if this is a good idea. I've decided on my board, limits, etc but I figured before I actually sit down and invest money I simply would watch the board and make notes on the players beforehand - at least what I can see from betting patterns and what they show on showdown.

Good idea? Or is it better to get in there and start mixing it up?

I tried this for a little while, but it didn't make too much sense. People come in and out of a ring game so often, plus who knows when a seat will open up, and the fishy players might be gone by then, or may have tightened up.... I say just take a seat, and if you really don't want to mix it up yet, just fold everything except for big premium hands until you feel comfortable.
Lack of Discipline and Over-Confidence... The root of all poker evil.

Take a seat and start whipping some ass.

If you're going to take notes you'll see all you need to in the first three or four orbits.

i get on the waiting list for a specific table, then go there and start taking notes. by the time i'm seated, i know every player's tendencies and how to exploit them. if the table sucks by the time my number is called, i leave and start over.

I not in the habit of doing this, but won't PT gather stats for you while you wait for a table, without your needing to sit and watch?
