    Default F**king Rivered

    Guys,

Did I play this hand wrong ?

I had J 8 off suit... There were no raises pre flop so I stayed in...

    Flop: Q 10 5

There was no chance of any flush either, and one guy made a 2*BB raise, I called and everyone else folded...

    Turn: 9

The guy raises again, I raise him, this went back and forth 5 times, until I said F**k it and went all in, he called.

    river: Q

The guy made his boat Q's over 9's...

I knew he didn't have me beat on the turn.. Isn't a 100K (play $) bet a bit crazy to call with two pair ?

What did I do wrong? or was this just a lucky draw ?

#1. Basically this is just a bad beat, and you're probably going to get less nice responses than this one saying so.

    2. How much was his flop bet relative to the pot? Don't call any substantial bet with a gutshot draw. It's hard to get good pot odds on it.

    3. Given that you did call with a gutshot draw, he probably had no idea what you were holding (assuming he even reads other players at all - he may not). I've seen good players bet heavily after an opponent hit a gutshot draw because they assume no one would call that first bet with just a four-outer. Sometimes mysterious holdings can get you in trouble when the opponent has no way of putting you on your hand, and they have a decent number of outs to improve.

    4. Don't dance with him on the raises. If you have him, raise all in early. As soon as he shows resistance, make it expensive.

    5. He got lucky on the end, nothing you could do.

    Thanks for the advice dale;

His flop bet was miniscule, like 2k into a 6k pot...

So I guess on pot odds, i should have layed it down ?

I guess my odds of hitting the gutshot were 4/45 ? or appx 9% ?

What were my pot odds then, I don't understand how you calculate them ???

    would it have been 2/10 ? 20% ?

Just because people aren't raising doesn't mean that they don't have hands much better than J8. J8 is not even limp worth at a full table, IMO. Clear fold preflop.

How did you know you had him beat on the turn? You've got the low end of a straight, and KJ is a significant possibility. Dont get me wrong, 2nd nuts is always a great hand to be holding - but it's also extremely dangerous given the right circumstances. (ie, opponent limps preflop, puts a small bet on the flop, and goes nutsoid on the turn when his nut straight completes). This is all assuming you are up against an average player and don't have any reads on him in terms of style.

In summary I think you were far too loose preflop, and far too confident on the turn.

Something u will see ALL the time at a PLAY money table. They have 8.2 million playchips socked away, so why not? IMO play chips will make you a worse poker player over time. How can u improve by playing in a lottery style poker game? If you can spend $25 on poker books or whatever, surely u can afford a small online deposit. Even playing microlimits for real money will get get u in games where your strategy will be more effective. Everyone pays their "tuition" at some point. But back to the hand, yea u were a 90% favorite after the turn with 1 card to come. Tough beat.

Dont seesaw with the guy...push right away on the turn. I dont care if I lose or win this pot. Second nuts is a push hand here. You are beat or you aren't take your licking if it comes. But the reason I push is that if this guy calls now he's just made a disasterous mistake with anything but the nuts (and as loose as the tables are it aint hard to get called). Hand him his arse quick and painfully more often than not.

And btw I dont think KJ is feesible here. NO PREFLOP RAISES. On a play money table.
Superb play sir...I always call 20% of my stack off with a gutshot draw. Excuse me while I race for my wallet.
