    Default LCD vs CRT

i'm considering getting a second monitor in the near future, but i can't decide what to get.

i don't want to spend too much, so no, i'm not gonna get that mad ass quad monitor set up with 21' monitors with 1600x1200 becuase that is like 5 grand.

anyways, i'm looking at one of the following:

    LCD, 17', max res 1280x1024
    CRT, 21', max res 1600x1200

now these are both about the same price. i currently quad table on my 17' CRT at 1280x1024, and the overlap is only a little so it doesn't really disturb me.

the LCD would be really nice and small, while the CRT...well it will take up half my desk.

so...which should i get? and why?

    I've never really liked LCD's

I like CRT's, and they last FOREVER.
    1) I've had 2 CRT's die in my lifetimeI've replaced 2 LCD's in the last 2 months at work. Both were replaced for free because they were less than 2 months old, but still.

    2) Basically, The only reason I can think of to get an LCD is if you need the space badly... If your desk is against the wall, pull the desk out a little and push the monitor back and you shouldnt lose to much space.

    3) 17' or 21' ... Ford Tempo vs Chevy Vett ... is it really that hard of a choice? =)

LCD for just the reason that it saves space on your desk...

an LCD supporting 1600x1200 is almost a grand!
defintely not worth it when i can get 3 LCDs supporting 1280x1024 for the same price.

LCDs are more fragile, but the space you save is worth it, I think. Plus, if you ever move, you'd need a crane to move the CRT.

I have a 22" CRT with 1920x1440 reso, and i wouldnt trade it for the world (well maybe a 1920x1440 reso LCD ) The only thing I do at my desk is use the computer anyways, so desk space is not an issue
    Goal for 2005: $30k
    So far: $31k

LCD's are sharper (using Cleartype under XP) and flicker-free, so text is easier to read and you experience less eye fatigue when computing for long periods. There's a chance you'll get an LCD with dead pixels, but I've not received many LCD's with that problem so far, and if you buy from a good retailer you can exchange.

I'd go with a 19" LCD if you can afford it. I think they are $299 or less these days.

Check out forums.anandtech.com and www.fatwallet.com/forums and you can read up more about the pros and cons... then check the hot deals forums on each site to see what are some of the better deals floating around...

if you play any sort of computer game I suggest CRT, if you are just web browsing and playing poker, LCD's are nice because they take up less room and are more appeasing to the eye (not the actuall display but it takes up less room on the desk and all...

I voted CRT because you get more resolution for your buck, and they last forever. I had my 7 year old 15" as my 2nd monitor until a couple days ago. It flickered and popped to death while I was 6 tabling. But how long do you think that LCD will last.

But then, if you are crushing the tables 8 at a time, I guess that extra few bucks is worth it.

If you do get an LCD, the Dell 2001 FP is definately the way to go. You can get them off Ebay, new for <$400.
Is that guy still part of the forum??

CRT if it is a second monitor.

I would hold off on an lcd until at least this summer when 8ms displays will be a norm. Then non-gamers can get the 16ms for a hell of a lot cheaper.
