Default Need Advice From Computer Geeks

I've been reading on various sites the privacy and ethical and legal concerns raised by Google's data retention/sharing policies and by GMail. I currently used hotmail, which sucks in innumerable ways, and am considering switching to GMail, so I figured I'd check the largest collection of computer guys I'm familiar with and see what input I might be able to get.

So, question is: what is your impression of GMail, and what (if any) concerns do you have about Google's privacy issues?

i was never a fan of their 'advertising' policies but if it doesnt bother you, go for it. i dont use gmail and never will but it really just comes down to how much it bothers you.

The "issue" with gmail is a non issue in my opinion. Basically all it amounts to is that there is an automated filter that can and does scan through your email to provide you with banners/adds that actually relate to things you have an apparent interest in.

If we were talking about a buisness related issue, or if you were some sort of top secret agent, then I might recomend steering clear, but for general users it's a great service that I'm certain you will find usefull. Provided you are not too paraniod.

    Just like that.

If you have no problem sending email in packets all across the internet, you ought not have a problem with gMail. No junk mail to speak of, just a handful of phishing emails so far. Nice, original, useful interface. HUGE storage. Downloadable by Outlook and OExpress. It is no-brainer good.
    I'm a know-it-all.

    No, really.

The reason I ask is that it seems most of the objections center around the idea that Google is 'opening the door' to a lowering of expectations with regards to email privacy. Is this truly the rantings of the paranoid, or is there something to this, possibly?

I'm really looking for answers with less to offer than this one, if at all possible.

lemonade was a popular drink and it still is
I'm not a card carrying member of the Tinfoil Hat Society, but these folks take the privacy issue to the extreme (http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/).

I've always just paid for hosting and email so I don't really care either way what Google does. I will send and reply to gmail accounts.
