continuation bets

I make alot of continuation bets/probe bets in SNGs 5,50 and 11 dollar entries. When making these bets I sometimes get called by mediocre hands. The continuation bets are about half pot, probe bets are a little less. The fact of the matter is that opponents are beggining to view these bets as less of a threat.

This comes into problem when I make a continuation bet and I am called on the flop. I might still have the best hand. Sometimes I am confused about the turn. I insist on checking, seeing if my opponent will give me the right pot odds to call. They consider my check on the turn to be extreme weakness and they bet the pot. I am forced to fold. I could of folded the best hand.

Therefore my point of posting this was when your continuation bet is called you might still have the best hand. Checking on the turn will automatically lead your opponent to bet big, since they think you are done with the pot and to confirm it they bet alot of there chips. Therefore I find myself making a continuation bet on the turn, all this betting can be a pain in the ass. I make these continuation bets to often and people late in the tourney catch on and flat out dont respect it. I then am left with difficult decisions of what to do with my mediocre hand. Any advice on this?

is your problem check calling preflop with mediocre hands, then trying to steal on the flop, or is it you're waiting for premium hands (difficult?) and raising preflop, only to have a flop bet called?

1. make less continuation bets, typically you should only be making a continuation bet if you were the one that raised preflop and you are in position (not a must but always a plus)
2. vary the sizes of your continuation bets
3. make a continuation bet even when you flop a monster, they will start folding when you show down a set of aces after u make ur normal continuation bet and he comes after you

Are you paying attention to how many opponents you are facing post-flop? You want to keep this number low, maybe 3 or less, in order for it to work most often...4 or more, its very very likely somebody has a continuation bet beat.

This statement has alot of truth. Sometimes people call with inferior hands. If you check on the turn the pots gone, your opponent will usually always bet even if he doesnt have a good hand. the bet just looks so routine that people dont respect it to the nth degree. What are your thoughts?

This mostly apply to ring games, however the same rules can be applied to a tourney. However, when I play a tournament (especially in the beginning) chips are much more valuable to me. If I miss, I make one continuation bet (not EVERY time, but a pretty strong one) if it's called, then I give up on the turn. Save the chips for later.

Remember, continuation bets are most effective when you have 2 opponents or less. With 4-5 players seeing the flop, one of them is bound to catch a piece of it. Harrington prefers to do these bets heads up.

exactly..when going for a steal i do it the way rippy does it--no earlier than 2 off button with NO action before you..you are looking for all folds when you do this, and if you get called fire out enough of a bet to get them to fold, but where if they do call or go over the top you can lay it down and be in an okay position. sometimes you will find yourself in a situation where it is necessary to push to get a fold, and thats just a risk your going to have to take. it all depends on the table, sometimes you need to push to steal other times a min raise will get the job done. study your opponents early in the touranment and know what type of players they are, that way you will be able to take advantage of them when the blinds tell you that you can.
