Sucked out, could I have prevented this?

Had this happen last night. This guy called so far outside of his pot odds on a GSSD it left me wondering....

Could / should I have done something different? Is the guy just too willing to bet a longshot?

I figure that on the turn, he had 6 outs (2 tens and 4 queens) and is about 13% to hit, he's paying 32% into the pot. When playing, I thought maybe he hit trips on the turn, I did not expect to see the straight draw.

I think this comes down to people playing at this level being a) not bothered about risking 40c with 6 outs and b) crap at poker.

You seem to know what you're doing - could you move up to $10NL maybe? This'll still happen, but hopefully less.

(of course, you have to remember that 80% of the time you WILL win in this situation so really you should want it to happen all the time!)

Accept the fact that even though you made a 'big raise', it was forty cents. If you came by my desk right now, my having no idea who you are, and asked for forty cents, I'd give it to you. It's forty cents. The people at this level are not big thinkers, they by and large are not going to understand pot odds, outs, etc. Invest more money, or learn to deal.

Here's what a lot of micro limit players don't understand. In order to beat your limit you have to stop pussy footing around and drop the hammer precisely when you are sure you have a vulnerable hand that is ahead. Micro limits isn't about betting 40¢ on the turn buddy, it's about noticing that he's fishing or only holding top pair and charging him like $4. Here's the beauty in that...

1. It's the only thing that will make some of those chasing bastards fold

2. Some of the chasing bastards will call anyway and pay you off most of the time

3. Usually the people that call have a hand that's not a draw, and isn't as good as yours.

Bottom line is that it's to your benefit to push hard when you're likely to be ahead. Stop worrying that you're up against a set, and stop trying to milk the hamster.

The key here is that 40¢ on a micro table is equivalent to $4 on a 50NL table monetarily, but psychologically they are a world apart. Stop acting like someone is going to respect 40¢ because it's proportionately just as large compared to the limit. That's hogwash. Doesn't work that way.

Yeah, I guess it goes both ways. If you want people to respect your raise in the micro limits, then you should play respectful cards. You could say, well it was only four cents to call with my ace junk, but it was only forty cents for him to call with his bottom pair gut shot draw.

I'd say, move up limits. And also, get ready for this to happen to you A LOT MORE. No matter what limit, someone will hit their gut shot on you.

Just yesterday at $200 NL I have 22. Flop is 247. Limped pot of $9.

I check.
Seat 4 bets $7.
Seat 5 calls $7.
I raise to $30.
Seat 4 folds.
Seat 5 calls.

Turn is A. So board is A247. Pot is roughly $80.

I bet $70.
Seat 5 calls.

River is 5. So board is A2457. Pot is roughly $220.

I check.
Seat 5 bets $40. I call.

Seat 5 shows A3o for the straight. So get used to it. It's never gonna end.
