    Default over confidence, I think

    Hi everyone,

I've been away for a few months, not been able to play any poker, but I've just started up again. It's also my first time back on the forum since starting to play again, I thought I'd open with a question about this hand coming up.

    niptwister folded.

    Dealing flop.
    Board cards

    $Blackwidow bet 960

    $Blackwidow called 640 and is All-in

    Showdown!
Seat 8 : Bezique has :Td: :Th:
    Seat 3 : $Blackwidow has

    Board cards :Kd: :Jd:

    Bezique has Straight JT987

    $Blackwidow has 3 of a Kind: 7s

Bezique wins 4,070 with Straight JT987
    Hand is over.

With no strength shown and being late in the betting I played relatively hard preflop, trying to eliminate the competition. Once I'd seen the flop, I'll be honest, I pretty much decided that I 'd won the hand. I didn't think at all about what my opponent was holding.

In hindsight, because he raised so hard I'm inclined to believe that I should have been more cautious. Though there was a very good chance my hand would improve on the turn and river.

Is there a better method of play here?

    Cheers for your help

I play it the same way. You're fairly likely to have the best hand (with A9 this guy is going to play exactly the same way, I think...who calls that much preflop with 7s? A player who would do the same with A9.) And even if you don't have the best hand, you're very likely to make it, since any 6, T, or J gives it to you, and you have like another 1/4 an out from runner runner 8s or 9s.

Even knowing his hand, you're 32% to win. You're getting almost even money on a call here, and that's assuming you don't have the best hand! If you call, there's no question that the rest of the chips are going in by the river. Either he has you beat and will bet and you're forced to call with the odds you're given, or you have him beat and he'll fold his bluff to future bets. Might as well bet it here.

    himself fucker.
Limp to set, try and chase your straight very cheaply (i.e. tend to check/fold)

I was feeling over-aggressive this morning, I think.

I definitely prefer a limp preflop at most tables, given that it's a full table and there were a lot of people in the pot before it got to you.

    Thanks very much,

I can see better the merrits of limping now (i think) I'll try out the less agressive approach in the future.

    Cheers very much guys

I'll agree I'm mostly limping here, but as played I'm not folding on that flop.

Usually I tend to limp TT in a full table from MP, however with 4 limpers in front of you I think the 4BB raise to thin out the field a bit and understand where you are makes a lot of sense.

I am very suspecious of a player of limping UTG and then calling a big raise, it can be an indication of a strong hand, however I would expect AA, KK even QQ to reraise.

The flop is a good one for you, I do not like the push from UTG, but with your 10 outs I would call it anyday
