Default What am I doing wrong? SnG HH

I'm on a horrible run at the moment, this is my latest SnG, where i finished 5th. I didn't think i did a lot wrong (apart from lose lol) but i'm sure you guys can find holes. If anyone could take the time to read this and comment, i'd be very grateful.

Start has 9 players, 2k stacks, blinds 20/40, go up every 8 minutes.

From this i decide Shady Lane is just a very loose player, they have raised most hands they are involved in so far, and this proves they don't often have a good hand even.

I just got the feeling he didn't have an ace, and could see a call here with KJ QT JT. Once he called me on the turn i felt pretty sure he wouldn't fold unless to a large bet, and he was probably ahead of me, so i checked to find out. My initial feeling was wrong, but it didn't cost me too much. Not sure about what i should have done with this hand though.

I thought i would try a steal, i was half-expecting Shady Lane to call, and thought i could probably win a big pot if i hit the flop at all. In hindsight this probably wasn't a good table to try this move on, should have limped/folded as i get the feeling Shady's calling range would not be affected by my raise. If anything, i think it made him more likely to call.

Once blinds are up to 50/100, you no longer have to option to limp. It's a law.

OK, for what it’s worth ……

JQo – I wouldn’t bother even limping with this early in a SnG. I would just look to preserve the chips at this stage.

AJo – Raise or fold this IMO.

KJo – in early position …… bin that crap

I like the play with the AQ (hand 3) – especially given your opponent.

Hand 4 – the KQo – I don’t like the raise on the turn. I am not sure quite what it is supposed to be. As for “so i checked to find out.” You don’t find out anything by checking. You have to bet that on the river after you have raised on the turn (IMO), largely because it is pretty much your strongest way of winning the hand.

Hand 5 – The T7 two–pair hand – you say “Trying to give anyone with a straight or flush draw bad odds to call now”, however you didn’t really achieve that. You raise 400 with 1600 already in the pot. Next player is therefore offered 400 to call to win 2000, or 5:1. The odds of hitting a straight on a card by card basis are 5:1 and a flush 4:1. When you raise, raise with conviction. Don’t just offer bad odds with hands like this, offer appalling odds.

The Q2o in the BB hand – That is one of those horrible situations. You know the guy is tilting badly but u don’t quite have the hand needed to call. However, 1290 to call to win how much? What were the blinds at this stage? It may be that u could have been priced into a call here, regardless of knowing shady’s cards.

Hand 7 – the AT hand – You are hoping he doesn’t show Tens and up or a stronger Ace. However, given the opponent, you said it yourself …… “I expected him to do this, with any suited, connected, paired or face cards. Knowing that he had 66, i'd probably still do this”. I call this no problem. If this is someone like TaeSamLee (who looks like he has barely played a hand – maybe I am wrong?) I would think twice.

Hand 8 – looks read dependant and looks like u got it right

Hand 9 – tough one. You have to ask yourself are you prepared to even take the coinflip here? i.e. Is the reward worth the risk? I possibly let this one go given that I am moving out of the blinds next hand but it is a definite toughie.

I think you played it well. Here’s my thoughts for what they’re worth.

Hand one, bet the flop. With a rags flop like that a steal works more times then not in my experience.

Hand two, you know Shady is going to call, bet bigger pre-flop

Hand four – bet the flop like you have the Ace. If you get called shut it down cause the caller does.

Hand six, yes, trying to steal with Shady there was pointless.

Hand seven, Raise with AT? Too loose for my taste even in late position. Maybe for a steal but again that’s pointless when Shady is going to call everything. And I don’t like calling when you can’t put him on anything. Fold it and wait for a better hand.

Last hand – Grrrr, I hate that situation.
"Good is the enemy of great." - Some smart guy.

Even with 2k starting stacks? I stop limping at 100/200 as a general rule of thumb.

Fair points, thinking about it AJo should be the only one i would consider limping, having wrongly expected that i would be able to.

I expected him to check/call up to about 500 chips on the river, but didn't have a strong read on the guy so wanted to see what kind of cards he was making that play with, was scared he could be slowplaying a flopped straight (check, minraise, smooth call)

    Yeah, didn't think straight lol.

Blinds were 100/200, so a call would have made the pot 3080. Didn't think about it at the time tbh, but say he had Axo, x being 3-J. Then i am about 35% to win, i make it -EV of about 200 chips. I had assumed him to have an A or K at least i suppose, and a Q would have been even worse. With something like QT/QJ i am probably calling this.

Hand 9 – tough one. You have to ask yourself are you prepared to even take the coinflip here? i.e. Is the reward worth the risk? I possibly let this one go given that I am moving out of the blinds next hand but it is a definite toughie.
I should have folded this, but then hindsight is a great thing lol. Thanks a lot for the comments.

Hand one, bet the flop. With a rags flop like that a steal works more times then not in my experience.
With that many limpers? In my experience there is rarely a flop that nobody has hit that early on with 4 limpers, and even then a lot of people are willing to gamble with 2 overs.

Hand four – bet the flop like you have the Ace. If you get called shut it down cause the caller does.
Yeah, probably should have just got money in on the flop. I was hoping the turn would give me a straight i guess.

Hand six, yes, trying to steal with Shady there was pointless.
Agreed. I was doing what i normally do and not adjusting to the table. Most tables i find myself on would have folded there (hardly ever get called on first steal).

Hand seven, Raise with AT? Too loose for my taste even in late position. Maybe for a steal but again that’s pointless when Shady is going to call everything. And I don’t like calling when you can’t put him on anything. Fold it and wait for a better hand.
The point was that i expected him to do that, and i was likely ahead. Assuming that he will come over the top and the limper will fold, i am paying 1590 for a pot of 3780 that i could well be favourite for. Even with him on low pp i have odds to make this move.

    Thanks for the response.

Even with 2k starting stacks? I stop limping at 100/200 as a general rule of thumb.
With 2k starting stacks you've got more of a cushion to make a continuation and let it go if things go bad. Maybe you could limp a low PP for set value at a very passive table at this level, but I'd certainly 3BB raise AJo.

Also, I think I would have pushed K9 UTG if you hadn't pushed aggressively two hands prior. If this hand had been the KQ, I'd push.

Yeah if i hadn't pushed with the KQ i would have pushed with K9s for sure, and if the other way round i am probably pushing both. Though in all honesty it only really makes a difference if i get called by AQ AJ AT A9.

Just means you have extra chips to continuation bet.

It's just horrible to limp off 5~8% of your stack.

You're just commiting too much money preflop without pushing anyone out WHILE playing a shitty hand.
