He is pretty much broke from what Paul Phillips thinks.

classic matusow
The new issue of cardplayer has an interview with mike matusow. Apparently it's not online yet but it's a highly entertaining read. Those of you who aren't personally acquainted with mike may not know that it's easy to dislike mike when you first meet him (trust me, I sure did) but almost impossible to dislike him after you've known him for a while. He's quite a character. So I'm mostly laughing with mike on this one and only a little bit at him.
MK: Still, a million dollars is a pretty good score.
MM: I needed to make one of the top three places. Number nine doesn't mean anything to me. It just enables me to pay off a few markers.
Ouch, is he saying he's millions in debt? That's unfortunate. It's interesting to me that people often believe they can gamble their way out of debt that deep when gambling is what buried them in the first place.
MK: Does the notion of going broke bother you?
MM: I have people I can borrow money from. I don't worry about money. When things get bad, my mom asks how I will pay bills. I say, "Ma, shut up. Have I ever worried about money?" I don't worry about money. Somebody will always loan me money.
Then a bit later:
MM: [...] Right now there is probably not a human being in the world with less regard for money than me. I make bets for thousands of dollars that I know I can't win. I was at the poker table once and made a $5,000 bet with Howard Lederer that Shawshank Redemption won best picture. Doyle Brunson told me not to make that bet because he made it once and lost. Of course, I didn't listen, and had to give Howard $5,000.
It's funny to imagine people lining up to loan him money when he talks like that. "You may as well just be lighting this on fire, but don't worry, I'll pay you back."
MK: [...] your last hand against him [Raymer] was pretty much a coin flip, with your pair of nines against his two overcards and four to a flush. That was when he outdrew you.
MM: So, if it's fifty-fifty, would you want to go in holding a made hand or needing to make a hand?
MK: [STUNNED SILENCE]
I made up the stunned silence part. He doesn't even comment on that answer. GREAT MOMENTS IN MATHEMATICS!
