5 Card Stud: How do you play this?

I thought this hand was interesting.

What do you put 69rss on, and what is the best way to continue? Should I have slow-played so that I could get a double bet in on a big bet round? This guy had just joined the table, so he may've been a donkey, but I'm pretty sure he should need (9) 9 to reraise here, since I think my play suggests (A) J.

Not much you can do. I don't understand why you think you're final re-raise suggested (A)J? Unless you're a complete maniac I don't see how they would put you on anything less than (J)J. Your open pair on 3rd beats anything he may have regardless of your hole card. Checking here is just too obvious and with only two cards to come it's not likely that he'll catch up anyways. Bet out and pray he is enough of a donk to call.

i have never played 5 card stud. Do you just get 5 cards and that is your hand...?

Start with one down, one up. Betting round. 3rd card and another betting round. 4th card and betting doubles. 5th card.

I meant raising after a Q completed the bet suggested at least (A) J (that is my guess with my limited knowledge of this game). I don't think he can reasonably 3-bet anything other than (9) 9, since any unpaired combination would be behind. I guess there is some chance he was a donkey with (A) 9 or something.

I'm wondering if I should smooth call his reraise and plan for a check-raise or raise when the betting limit doubles. What would be some potential drawbacks for a play like this?

The only thing that makes sense there is 99, or one really stupid bluff attempt. Once he sees you now have (X)JJ he has to fold his 99

Im not much of an expert but he obviously had 99... So not much wrong with calling on second instead of raising. Then you can get the reraise in when the limit doubles. Anyway once you catch the J he isnt going to play with you, sad but true.


I hate it when you improve your hand too much like this. Once I had xA(A) and this guy obviously had Kx(K) and I called his huge raise down on third planning to raise fourth. Then I go and catch another A to have open aces and he folds. "nice catch idiot I cant believe you called me just to catch an ace"
