Lay down JJ?

.25/.50 game. I'm in bb. MP raises $3 pre-flop. I have JJ. Do you call or laydown the hand? Raiser usually bets his hands, I cant remember him ever bluffing. I folded figuring there was more hands down the line.

Looking back I think I should have called and tried to hit trip J's. Could have been a nice pot if I had of.

Just keep in mind why your playing the hand...

They dont call "JJ" fishhooks simply because of the shape of the letter "J".

LOL, we must have been posting at the same time. Stack size was I had $80+ and he had $53+. He had not been at the table long, but I have played against him a few times. He always plays very tight.

you could have called that with any pocket pair jacks or lower.

JJ is a very tight fold, if he plays one hand every four orbits and you were positive he had a huge hand then it may be correct to fold here. That's a pretty huge raise, and I'd play it for set value at least. If he raised and somebody reraised then I could lay down JJ-QQ, just not in this spot. I probably wouldn't reraise in this spot though against a really tight player with JJ.

No re-raises or calls. It was folded around to me in the bb. Looking back I should have called and seen where that took me. As I said, I've played against him a number of times and he's always been tight, but that doesnt mean he didnt have TT. I just felt there was an above average chance he had QQ or better. But theres always that chance he had TT or a lower pp and just didnt want any callers.

Probably should have called it and seen the flop. I could be too tight I guess.

Even if you know he has one of those hands it's still worth it to try and hit a set considering the stack sizes. If the flop comes J high and he has AA-QQ it's going to be real hard for him to lay it down and you have a good chance at getting his whole stack. Also, he would make this same bet with AK - AQ (Maybe AJ even). I mean, you need one hell of a read to lay this down here. 99 times out of 100 i'm taking a flop.

If anything, I look for an overpair or set here. If I have an overpair, I'll raise a street to see where I really stand, and a set plays itself

i call for a set if i think he will marry his AA/KK/QQ when the flop comes J high. Another nice situation is if he holds AJ and it comes AJx on the flop. He will probably get alot if not all his chips in trying to protect against draws before he puts you on a set especially if it is 2 suited.
