cradle of filth is a good death metal band. Some good songs are hollowed be thy name(Iron maiden remake), suicide and other comforts and her ghost in the fog.
Also In Flames is a good metal band.
I dont know what alt. hardcore is but some good hardcore bands are... it dies today , Darkest hour , scars of tomorrow
If you like hardcore music like these bands i can name more.

Actually, I gave Opeth a listen a few weeks back. I didn't really enjoy it much.. And it's not that I'm narrow minded, I just listen to good music only :P . JUST kidding I have my own guilty pleasures.

The band I think of when someone says alternative rock is Oasis. And they suck so hard they blow. What is alt rock anyways? I hate how everyone needs to compartmentalize music. "Oh I listen to melodic black grind-core/math-rock, everything else sucks." wtf
Good to see some Opeth fans up in here. Freechu you should really give them a chance, especially if you're into good drumming. Check out Damnation- it's probably their easiest album to get into, if you want to listen to something heavier listen to Blackwater Park/Deliverance.
You should also check out Mars Volta's first LP if you haven't already. It will make your head spin. I'm not too fond of their latest album, but then again I haven't really given it a chance.
Also, for you self-proclaimed metalheads, I have one word for you: ZAO.

Where can I find these guys? I found a band out of Germany with that name on MySpace, but I got the feeling it wasn't them and didn't listen. Most German music makes me want to do horrible things to good people.

    aes rock
    atmosphere
    cage
    dmb
    incubus
    dcab
    ash
    dizzee rascal
    jimmy eat world

what can i say? i have an eclectic music taste.
    and death metal still blows.

the mars volta is AWESOME ... "televators" is just the best song.

"deliverance" is probably one of my favorites.

Yea Refused and Underoath are both great bands. The Shape of Punk to Come and The Changing of Times are flawless albums. Also, At The Drive-In's Relationship of Command fucking rules, I've hurt my neck listening to that LP.
IMO, I believe the days of good metal are behind us. Nearly every new release has left me disappointed. Opeth's Ghost Reveries is meh(the frontman got married, figures), Arch Enemy's latest album is passable, yet uninspired, ETID's Gutter Phenomenon is gay, doesn't compare to their first two, Underoath's new album with their new singer is an embarassment(they should've just broken up instead), Darkest Hour's Undoing Ruin sucks donkey(not that they were much good to start with, all they do is try to sound like At The Gates). The metal scene is dying I tell you, especially in the U.S. Instead of thrashing, screaming and rocking the fuck out, these bands are going soft, singing about wishy-washy feelings and getting dumped by their boyfriends in high-pitched emo voices and just being emasculated homos. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay.

    opeth is hardcore

my musical tastes fall somewhere in here:
    satriani
    vai
    dream theater
    chili peppers
    audioslave

Death Metal can be educational and nutritious. It builds strong bones and teeth. It teaches valuable life lessons such as "Wow, that chair hurt my back!", and "Dude, did you just kick me in the face?"
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

I tend to fall into this range too. To me, stuff like Pantera isn't music. It's just screaming set to noise. But hey, it's a free country.

All right, I am going to just crumble this thread to nothing with this, but when I was in college, the big shocker to me was Gwar and Cannibal Corpse. This dude in my dorm showed me the lyrics (of course I couldn't make them out by listening to them), and I will never forget these lyrics:

"I'm gonna rip your skull off and f**k your bleeding eye sockets".

    Nice.....

Makes me think my drinkin' and cheatin' songs (Merle Haggard, George Jones, Johnny Cash, etc.,) weren't so bad after all LOL

wilco - kicking television (live in chicago)

Pah! Lightweights. A friend of mine, for reasons best left to himself, owns an Anal Cunt album, with such charming titles as....

"I Became A Rape Counselor So I Could Tell Rape Victims They Deserved It"
"I Made Your Kid Get A.I.D.S So I Could Watch It Die"
"I Intentionally Ran Over Your Dog"
    and the classic
"You Robbed A Sperm Bank Because Your A Cum Guzzling Fag"

We even put it on once.

Anyone like Avenged Sevenfold? I despise their new stuff, they're becoming mainstream and it pisses me off. Their old stuff from two years ago (when no one knew who they were) is awesome though.

Yea I saw Mars Volta in Japan at a festival along with The Strokes and The Doors. The dudes in MV were pretty funny looking, they're real skinny and had the biggest fros I've ever seen on white people.

The old stuff worth a listen? I downloaded the new one and deleted it within a week.

A few bands I forgot...Atreyu is fairly dope. Ain't Love Grand is a good tune.

Deftones...Circa Survive, Neutral Milk Hotel, Project 86, The Postman Syndrome, Built to Spill. More bands to give a listen to out of a wide range...

YES!!! I don't blame you for deleting the new song, it SUCKS. I hate it. ***ing mainstream bullshit. Download "I Won't See You Tonight" (parts one and two, although two is iffy) and "Remenissions", those are my favorites by them.

A list of bomb-ass rock bands and albums I compiled for y'all:

ZAO- Splinter Shards the Birth of Separation, Blood and Fire Bring Rest, Liberate Te Ex Inferis (my current fave, it's a shame their new shit sucks)
    Sunny Day Real Estate- Diary
    Texas Is The Reason
    Rival Schools
Hot Water Music (their earlier work, such as Fuel For The Hate Game)
Radiohead- The Bends, OK Computer (goes without saying)
Fugazi (if you don't like Fugazi you don't like hardcore)
The Stills- Logic Will Break Your Heart (kinda pussy but still pretty good, freechu would probably like it)
The Advantage (best Nintendo-core band in existence)
White Stripes (one of the few bands that's actually going somewhere, very talented)
    Alice In Chains
    The Pixies- Doolittle
Joy Division (most depressingly catchy music ever)
Interpol- Turn On The Bright Lights
    The Fucking Champs
Children of Bodom- Fear the Reaper, Hatebreeder (sick Swedish metal, relatively easy to listen to)
At The Gates (epitome of Gothenberg metal)
    The Haunted- self-titled (basically ATG)
Michael Jackson (I'm not ashamed to say I'm gay for Michael)
