Default outside the box -- why bet this set?

early in a tournament, UTG limps I raise to 5BB with red nines.
UTG call the 150 ... and only has 40 behind

    Flop 9 high, all clubs.

    Discuss.

(Yes, I know all the chips are going to get in at some point.)

why not start checking? cheap showdown? the most it could cost is 40.

    Why does it matter?

It's 40. It doesn't matter if you win it or not. I'd get it in to try and put villian out.

40 chips is 40 chips...better in your stack than his....but let him put them in voluntarily, which he'll do if he has a club. I have seen players fight on with less, so a fold is not completely out of the question on his part although very unlikely, I admit.

Might belong in strats as it's a completely theoretical-type discussion, i.e. can betting gain you anything here? It's not about the pot, it's about the factors that make up a decision.

I might check the flop to allow this. I'd be the turn if he doesn't put it in.

It has a very tourney flavor to it as well. In cash games I would just stick it in.

That's what I did. I'm just practicing trying to think like you.

    That's not a joke.
